This week I was able to overcome what I thought would be one of the most difficult hurdles in a Moodle implementation. I knew that Moodle had some options to make this easier but didn't realize just how easy it would be. Moodle provides a couple of different options for managing users in bulk (at least I am only aware of 2).

This week I had some time to moodle around in Moodle. Moodle has some great standard reports but it doesn't appear to be too easy to customize them. I really haven't dug too deep until now so this was definitely an eye opener. I didn't realize how easy it was to set up.

One of the first hurdles myself and other rookie Moodle implementers have to overcome is increasing the maximum file upload size. Moodle defaults to a measly 2 MB maximum file upload size which is pretty limiting. Here's a brief rundown of how I was able to increase the max file upload size for moodle on a hosted server.

I finished up my first project developed with Captivate and decided to take the opportunity to dive into SCORM with Moodle. Until now, I have only experimented with moodle and have never had to worry about SCORM when publishing courses. Once I figured that out everything went surprisingly well.

I ran into a strange problem using an html file produced in Camtasia by TechSmith and delivered through Moodle that must be common amongst Camtasia and Moodle users. Apparently Moodle doesn't like any spaces or special characters in the file name because Camtasia uses windows naming conventions while Moodle uses Linux.

We all love multiple choice, true/false, matching or any kind of quiz questions that can be graded automatically by an LMS. This leaves us with the dilemma of cutting corners and using auto graded questions or sucking it up and putting in the hard work to manually grade essay questions and assignments submitted to the LMS.

I am in the process of implementing Moodle and my first time using an eLearning tutorial developed with Captivate did not go well. I ran a little test with a small group of people who are accessing Moodle through a Citrix connection. The tutorial froze up on about %50 of the end users and worked great for the other half.

At first Moodle seemed too good to be true but I soon realized that it was more complicated than I thought and that we would most likely need to hire help if we were to go down this avenue. In my previous post SCORM and Bandwidth , I described an issue I am having with a Captivate eLearning tutorial freezing up on some of my users accessing it through Moodle. It turns out I was right that the problem has something to do with the zipped SCORM package.

To address this issue I implemented a help forum on the organizations Moodle LMS where learners could go and post their non urgent questions. The problem with this is that the technical support staff was too busy to provide the one on one coaching that many people needed.

I freaked myself out this morning after making a small change which took down all of my sites on the same domain as my experimental moodle. Yesterday I installed Moodle using Fantastico on my hosted web server account and everything went great. Hopefully I won't have any more scares but even if I do I am sure I will learn from it.
