Perceptions and Factoids (LMS)

eLearning 24-7

If you have or are looking for an LMS, perhaps someone in your company or department has mentioned that this X vendor or Y vendor either isn’t known or they have never heard of them and thus it is better to go with a well-known vendor, because they must be better – I mean look at all the folks they have. Another zinger is the old some famous, everyone hates their LMS. At a recent presentation, I gave more than 65% of the audience raised their hands when I asked who hated their LMS. The 5 most common LMS complaints from end users

eLearning 24-7

As someone who has had the wonderful experience of buying (leasing) a LMS and the issues that arose beyond that, I can tell you that I feel your pain. There is nothing worse that spending the money, selecting the system, implement it, then it runs into problems and your end users – blame you. You buzz the assigned project manager or tech support person and listen to the whole “we hear you” and get back to you verbiage. “Yep, our system works all the time with Oracle.” You buy the LMS. The LMS didn’t support it.

Answering your LMS Questions

eLearning 24-7

I need a LMS. Q: I’m looking for a LMS that has classroom mgt, can have abc learners see only one course or a set of courses, while another group sees a different set of courses and I need to batch upload my learners. A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Task management. A: Yes.

The Cornerstone Effect

eLearning 24-7

First off let me be clear, this post is not about the Cornerstone OnDemand LMS in the sense of whether it is a good or bad platform. Nor is it about the company itself, rather it is about the effect the system has on the entire LMS industry. Several months ago I picked up on a few items other vendors would mention about other systems. If there is one word that will create panic in the LMS industry it is this word, “traditional” Its effect is the same one you would get if you saw a mouse scurrying past you as you ate at your favorite restaurant.

How to choose the right LMS

eLearning 24-7

The same thing applies to the learning management system market. The “I’ll just look at a couple of systems, and decide from there” method doesn’t work either. Selecting a system takes a lot of time, a lot of commitment on your part (and group, if applicable) and yes, even cost – the amount of time x productivity x your salary wage/time spent to find a system. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. The majority of systems today, have those set features in my example.

LMSs, TMs and HCMs

eLearning 24-7

SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? If you visit the Taleo home page, you will learn the following two items. I must have been sleeping, but when did “learning” slide under Talent Management? When did “learning, which is training” become a defacto component of Talent Management? They purchased Outstart, a LMS. Talent management.

Psst. You wanna buy some features?

eLearning 24-7

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. This is to say that 90% of features most folks seek are nearly universal in a LMS – low cost or otherwise. While UI on the front and back end of a system continues to be all over the place – from generally awful to very nice – regardless of the price point, its the features that stand out (or in some cases -you should stand clear off) in the space. Built in E-mail that blocks viruses, spam plus you can send out of the LMS. Wizards.

When or When Not to Use Open Source LMS?

– this is what a client’s IT Manager commented after looking at technology requirements sheet of our Wizdom LMS in a presentation last week (It’s built on.Net, and uses Windows Server, IIS, & MS SQL/Oracle as back-end platform). Over the past several years, we have seen a continuous disruption in the corporate learning market, and it threatens some of the more traditional tech tools like the learning management system. Top 50 LMS Report for 2016 – What you need to know (criteria, approach, and yeah some vendors)

In a little over two months, my 2016 Top 50 LMS Report will be available for purchase. Even open source systems. I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). But, they do use modules (so you can buy learning for example, and then down the road or at the same time performance and so forth). . To me, each one of them does a lot of different things, but learning is a secondary, not primary. . No.

#HRTECH Learning Vendors Preview – Who to see and who to avoid

eLearning 24-7

I recall at ATD this past year, a vendor who was trying to sell people ahead of time their LMS. This is a system that has a lot of potential, but still lacking a few key items in the areas of classroom management, compliance, gamification (no leaderboard), event management and so on. If you are willing to wait it out, until many of features I would find useful (and in many cases standard among the LMS space), then this is a system to explore. I place the system in my good to excellent category, simply because of its potential. The LMS is solid.

A few of the more interesting graphs that you can't really see well except by going and seeing a larger version at LMS Satisfaction and LMS Barriers and Features. Real learning – let’s not confuse it with completing templated exercises

Performance Learning Productivity

I read a piece written by Kate Graham of e2train on Thursday and it started me thinking about the ‘real learning versus managed learning’ debate. I just think that she has got it wrong in this piece as to what real learning is and the role that LMS and ‘social learning’ have to play in the mix of building workforce capability and effectiveness in organisations.

It seems like every day there is another e-Learning tool claiming to be the be-all, end-all for e-learning development. That said, this got me thinking: which e-learning tools out there are the most popular? 5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. For the mobile learning space – it is a necessity. If you are still a huge fan of ILT or believe a blended learning approach is necessary, why stick only to PowerPoint, handouts and long talks? Talent Management. Social Learning.
