Ie, it includes the need for a portal. When I ask audiences “how many of you have portals in your org”, everyone raises their hands. HR, product, sales, they all have their own portals. A user-centered way of organizing portals makes sense then. The general claim is that they augment an LMS, not replace it.

Similarly, should you host non-course resources in the LMS or out in a portal (which is employee-focused, not siloed)?

My Internet Time Alliance colleagues Harold Jarche and Jane Hart have been (rightly) eviscerating the LMS. I see two key functions an LMS provides. The LMS model is that the learner comes to the LMS. Really, performers should have custom portals! This is a bigger problem, but an LMS isn’t going to solve it.
