A colleague recently asked (in general, not me specifically) whether there’s a role for LMS functions. Should you do social learning in the LMS version of that, or have a separate system? Similarly, should you host non-course resources in the LMS or out in a portal (which is employee-focused, not siloed)?

A message to CxOs 2: about org learning myths

I was regaled with a tale about how sales folks and execs were insisting that customers wanted training. If it’s persistent skills, yes, training’s the answer. However, a client found that customers were much happier with how-to videos than training for most of the situations. Customers want training.

Learning or Performance Strategy

In the other case, an organization is executing on a shift from a training philosophy to a performance focus. Which of course I laud, but the powers-that-be expect it to yield less training without much other change. However, it’s a mindset shift for a group that previous was developing training.

Do you think the current systems in use for L&D are adequate? The legacy of the training mentality is keeping us mired in the past. I think that adding portal and social media capabilities to systems with a ‘course’ DNA isn’t the path forward. If not, why so?
