Social software is based heavily on participation, and this is apparent in a number of features including social tagging , voting, versioning, hyperlinking and searching, as well as discussion and commenting. One of the most popular activities on our wiki based learning programmes was called ‘goldmining’.

I have been doing that for a while, with wikis, blogs and the like, circumventing the university portal. I am against the sterile, meaningless Managed Learning Environments (read BlackBoard, SharePoint and yes, even Moodle) that universities and colleges push which are purpose built to maintain strict control.
