Masie went on record to talk about the ’ e’ in e-learning standing for experience, extended and expanded learning and Marc Rosenberg’s excellent book on e-learning in 2001 provided clear guidelines for changing the way that organisations learn for competitive advantage. Those against ( led by Dr Marc Rosenberg) highlighted that e-learning today was woefully short with poor quality content, death by powerpoint and lack of market penetration indicating that we have a long way to go. A bit of history 10 years ago, almost to the day, every staff member of the company I worked for was called to a special meeting to hear about a significant new event in the world of online learning. Together with my colleagues around the globe, I was interested to hear what was going to be unveiled.

An e-Journal of Learning Innovation ISSN 1448-2673 Think piece: Defining the ‘e’ in e-learning In this think piece, Elliott Masie, who co-invented the term ‘e-learning’, argues the need to change the ‘e’s definition from ‘electronic’ to ‘excellent’. In doing so, he explores how both teachers and learners require new skill sets, roles and adaptations. First, Elliott Masie's column titled "Time to Step Up: Learning's Role During Layoffs," covered a topic I'd never really put much thought towards: What are the roles of the learning department during layoffs? 34; where he provides a good starter list, one that could be handy if you ever need to defend why time and resources should be spent on sound instructional design (rather than simply pumping out PowerPoint slides and calling it e-Learning, for instance).

I was interested to read in Donald Clark's review of Learning 2005 that Elliott had decreed that there should be no PowerPoint at the show. However, I wonder whether PowerPoint is really the guilty party here. Now might be a good place to introduce today's story, extracted from Above and Beyond's award-winning Ten Ways to Avoid Death by PowerPoint (I know, I wrote it - but what's wrong with just a little bit of self-promotion every I can certainly sympathise with Elliott's intentions here - after all, we have all had to sit through far too many mind-numbing slides full

How many times have I told someone that emailing around a PowerPoint slide deck to the sales people doesn't constitute training. As an example, take a look at Masie's recent piece . But several people mentioned in the blog world that they liked Masie's piece. I received a comment from Jesse Ezell that brings up an issue that I've been grappling with and I would love to get some input (comments) from everyone who reads this blog. Jesse saw a post where I pointed to slides from a recent presentation and he commented: A PPT slide deck is a horrible way to convey anything

Through their presentations at conferences, Allison Rossett, Elliott Masie, Gloria Gery, and scores of other awesome teachers have shaped the thinking of the greater learning and development community of practice. More Death by PowerPoint
preparation for my conversation on PowerPoint is Tyranny midday Wednesday, I took an impromptu survey on what makes for a conference When I signed up for Spaces for Interaction: An Online Conversation about Improving the Traditional Conference , I didn’t appreciate how timely the topic would become.

Listening to Eliot Masie correctly telling me (through an audio feed) that memory sticks will allow all sorts of things that no one could have imagined made me realize why I seriously doubt that any of what he describes will ever make an impact on learning. It changed things much more than we think (PowerPoint did as well, but in a totally different - and I would say regressive - direction). Six months or so of focusing on a real (rather than a virtual) theme -- in this case, intercultural communication -- led me far away from the specific "culture of e-learning shared by the participants of this blog, although my intercultural work inevitably involves online deployment.
