I also was intrigued to see Microsoft showing the Fuse team rather then SharePoint. They were also touting a beta of accessing Microsoft Office docs collaboratively through FaceBook.

That data wasn’t from Microsoft, it came from a secondary service who got it from a study on web pages. I like JD Dillon ‘s explanation : it needs to be as long as it needs to be, and no longer. That attention explanation? It went right to the ‘span of a goldfish’ Sorry, that’s debunked (for instance, here ;).

I used Microsoft Word, and with the styles option was able to meet the rigorous requirements of the library for theses without having to pay someone to type it for me (a major victory in the small battles of academia!). I finally justified the purchase of a Mac II to write my PhD thesis on.

While I have not been a fan of Microsoft in general, I learned Word to write my PhD thesis, and have used it consistently ever since. To do this, I use the outline feature hugely. I don’t just restructure, but move chunks to different places using these capabilities.

Cross Platform issue/ lack of standards – html 5 not standard yet but if it were would be great but there will be, of course, resistance by software companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft etc. I would love to see productivity tools available to enable users to design/write their own apps that meet their needs better.

However, I decided to update myself on Sharepoint features, and went to look at Microsoft’s page. They tout collaboration, content management, and search as well as portals. This sounds like they’re beginning to incorporate real eCommunity/social networking capabilities (they mention blogs & wikis, and expertise finders).

What’s been a barrier are inconsistent implementations of web standards, like Microsoft’s non-standard versions of HTML for browsers and Java. Microsoft’s done well for itself with the Office suite of applications, and by opening up the XML version, they’re benefiting while not doing harm.
