There’s a wide expanse between the  free, open source LMS systems (Moodle, for example) and expensive, proprietary systems currently available. Let’s face it. Despite the appeal of downloading a free application or program, open source systems require someone with programming savvy to make them work — a resource most small associations don’t have. Wouldn’t it be great to find a system

It has already drawn more interest from the press than my other session on the Moodle learning management system. I will be speaking at one of the last Idea Labs at the ASAE Technology Conference next Friday, February 12 th at 3:30PM. I like to think that I was placed in this “closing” position because conference organizers felt that the topic of “Using eLearning Games to Recruit, Engage, and Educate Members” would keep attendees energized until the very end of the conference.

Moodle is well known for a slight lack of design flair in the out-of-the-box theme packs. Often, though, we'll need to redesign the overall look and feel of a Moodle site. Moodle is a very complex application, with many different parts of the interface that need styling. Secondly, remember that That's fine. They still work.

And “in times like these…” Why pay for a pricey LMS when you can Moodle or Drupal or Sakai ? Why do companies continue to pay huge dollars for products that are now being offered for free? Moodle and other open source products have huge communities behind them. There’s no vendor who creates Moodle per say. Richard Nantel of Brandon Hall recently posted about average LMS prices . A ‘low-cost’ LMS starts at an average of $58K.
