The new Star Trek brings back mention of the legendary simulation - Kobayashi Maru. Thinking about this test gives me four ideas about making training simulations effective. Here are my ideas to add to my previous post of how real a training simulation should be. | KAPP NOTES MARCH 14, 2013 A Conversation with Clark Aldrich -Part One He then moved into designing and creating simulations for learning. It was titled “Simulations and the Future of Learning: An Innovative (and Perhaps Revolutionary) Approach to e-Learning.” It is structured much like Internet Movies DataBase, but focused on educational simulations and serious games. simulation simulationsAny future books in the works? | | | | | | | LEARNING DEVELOPMENTS FEBRUARY 8, 2013 Using Lessons from Video Games in E-Learning wrote a blog article last year about what the 80's movie WarGames teaches us about learning games. Some of these lessons are: Games can be used to simulate real work situations. learning Games Simulations WBT Self-pacedI'm a child of the 80's. Everyday I am reminded of that by the marketers who want dollars from the 30-something crowd. The fact that I grew up in the 80's puts me in perfect place to see the evolution of video games. Yes, I played Pong back in the day. The Atari 2600 stole hours of my elementary years. That actually took me by surprise. learning on the job). | PERFORMANCE PUNCTUATED APRIL 20, 2010 Using Storytelling in Learning, Part 1: Yelling at the Movie Screen Ever heard someone yell at characters on a movie screen or talk back to the television? ve been fortunate to spend most of my career working on performance simulations. The word “simulation” means many different things to different people. But at its core, simulations provide a realistic environment for learners to try new behaviors and experience the likely outcomes. | ELEARNING NOT AS USUAL NOVEMBER 16, 2011 eLearning Simulations and DISC Training We're finding more and more ways to use our elearning simulations with 3D avatars. Just the other day we started working on a set of simulations that demonstrate the wide-ranging characteristics and preferences between the different generations in the workplace. These will be stand alone simulations, used in a live workshop. Practice. Behavior change? Of course it is. | THE LEARNING GENERALIST SEPTEMBER 13, 2009 Four things Star Trek can teach us about Simulation Design I'm a big Star Trek fan and the last movie just rocked back childhood memories of idolising James T Kirk. PERFORMANCE PUNCTUATED | THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010 Using Storytelling in Learning, Part 2: 7 Tips for Effective Storytelling These tips come from my simulation design experience, but really, they apply to most learning opportunities. While a novelist employs narrative as her primary tool, the simulation designer has many more tools available. Don’t feel you have to tell the entire story of a job in a simulation. Simulation stories work best when they are focused just on those parts of the job that are complex or difficult. We designed a simulation that incorporated the entire call, but focused decisions specifically on openings and closings. by Rich Mesch. The demands of your boss? MORE >> -
CLARK ALDRICH | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2009 Virtual Worlds, Simulations, and Games for Education: A Unifying View I wrote this article for Innovate magazine a few months ago, to coincide with the release of Learning Online with Games, Simulations, and Virtual Worlds. They sense an overlap between virtual worlds, games, and simulations, and yet they know that one is not synonymous with the other. In contrast, simulations use rigorously structured scenarios carefully designed to develop specific competencies that can be directly transferred into the real world. Those rules become stricter in more intricate games and in simulations. Many practitioners have been struck by a paradox. MORE >> -
PERFORMANCE PUNCTUATED | THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2010 Using Storytelling in Learning, Part 3: The Predictable Unexpected Movies frequently build interest by inserting compelling story twists. But the technique is nothing new; Alfred Hitchock shocked the movie-going world in 1960 when he killed off the main character in Psycho ten minutes into the film. And perhaps that’s the key difference between movie storytelling and learning storytelling. For example, in a sales simulation I designed, you spend a long time building a relationship with a client, in hopes that he will introduce you to an executive. LITMOS | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2011 Adobe Captivate 5 -- Simulations on Tap With Captivate's autorecording modes, you can go in one, two, or three different ways: Demonstration mode ("show me"): Records what's going on on-screen, but with no user interaction in the Flash movie output. Training simulation mode ("try it"): Captivate automatically adds click boxes, text entry boxes, and feedback (failure/hint captions). Your learner can interact and perform within the simulation. Assessment simulation mode ("test me"): The click boxes and text entry boxes are there, but the feedback isn't. USD (or $299.00 USD for a qualified upgrade). No way. MORE >> -
