What does the 80's movie WarGames tell us about learning games?

Integrated Learnings

recently watched the 1980's movie WarGames with my son. As a dad, I often use movies like that as an opportunity to teach something new to my son. The movie is about a young computer hacker, played by Mathew Broderick , who unwittingly accesses a NORAD supercomputer controlling United States military nuclear weapons during the Cold War. As a child in 1983 I was captivated by the science and drama of the movie. Lesson 1: Games can be used to simulate real work environment situations. by Jonathan Shoaf. Of course, I explained that things were not that simple.

Gamification with Narrative- The story behind the content that drives the simulation

Your Training Edge

Can simulations tell stories? The affirmative answer of yes suggests that gamified simulations built around narrative may be considered an anomaly by some seeing as how the term of gamification was only recently introduced. But for us it’s just common practice, so let me delve a little further into what I mean by narrative and how it has a profound affect on a gamified simulation. By further characterization, simulations are narratives; they have a story behind them. That’s why implementing narrative is so appealing within simulation and its design.

Four things Star Trek can teach us about Simulation Design

I'm a big Star Trek fan and the last movie just rocked back childhood memories of idolising James T Kirk. The new Star Trek brings back mention of the legendary simulation - Kobayashi Maru. Thinking about this test gives me four ideas about making training simulations effective. Here are my ideas to add to my previous post of how real a training simulation should be.

The psychology of gamification in education: why rewards matter for learner engagement.

We all know it is there, and that clearly millions of people love gaming, but video games just don’t seem to get everyone excited in the same way that, say, movies do. The reality is that the video game (gamification) industry is twice the size of the movie industry and three times the size of the music industry, going on 2013 figures. So is gaming or gamification as big as we think?

Does Your eLearning Give People Nightmares?

Have you ever watched an animated movie or played a video game and felt uncomfortable, like something was not quite right? Many courses use simulations and animations as a way to get the learner more invested in the course. If you’re using simulations, try to make the figures distinctively cartoonish. You may have experienced the “uncanny valley.” This theory, first posed by robotics professor Masahiro Mori , states that there is a “valley” where figures look almost human, but not enough to be 100% convincing. The effect decreases the less human the figures appear.

Design: En Media Res

Kapp Notes

It's a familiar technique: the viewer is catapulted immediately right into the middle of the action, usually a dramatic pivotal moment upon which the rest of the plot is constructed The idea, used in television and movies is to drop the viewer (or in our case, the learner) into the middle of the situation and allow him or her to then determine what is going on before the plot or lesson is being explained. The learner is placed into the context of the learning situation immediately. In instructional design terms, it is a lot like Gagne's idea of gaining attention.
