I've not seen a lot about Mzinga in the eLearning world, but it represents something pretty interesting. Mzinga is a merger of KnowledgePlanet (an LMS provider and also the maker of the eLearning simulation tool - Firefly) and Shared Insights - a community / business social networking software company. I wonder if mzinga does?

Mzinga is clearly targeted at the learning space, being integrated with an LMS. Yet, for a learning group, Mzinga’s integration of formal and informal learning is also plausible.

The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Yes, an LRS can be an amazing tool and component, but that data record is an important piece of the pie. . Connectors include BI tools. Works with any system, including LMS (subsets too), TM/PM and aforementioned BI tools. Some vendors though have changed the premise of the data record transference. No pricing on the site.

Mzinga’s OmniSocial product sort of fits the build, but it lacks some components, to what I see as a true system, specifically 100% standalone, since it can also be integrated into a LMS or used in their own LMS. Thus you create your courses via your own authoring tool and upload them into the cloud. No need to have a LMS.

By doing this, George argues that vendors (LMS in particular), and the organizations they sell to, will begin to see their product no longer as simply an event-based tool for learning, but rather as a process-based tool for capacity planning and workplace effectiveness.
