Members of a learning community must have a desire to network, collaborate, and share information or the community will not thrive and will not drive business value. Some research findings and “experts” suggest that rewarding community members for meeting networking, collaboration, and information sharing targets (or punishing them for failing to meet such targets) is detrimental to quality, motivation, and attitudes. Learning or professional communities are “healthy” and beneficial to the organization when its members are intrinsically motivated to participate and contribute. What

rely on my network to connect me to other people and information because I cannot know and will not try to know everything.  My organization deployed a “expert locator” and “social networking” system in order to help employees quickly find and leverage in-house expertise but these systems provide a half baked solution.  Activities and interactions that occur in blogs, wikis and social networks naturally provide the cues that are missing from current Why is it so difficult to quickly find someone in my organization to answer a pressing question, provide advice about a procedure, explain how to use some software, or tell me where to find an expert, course, or document?

The beauty of an open source environment is that we can always tap into our networks and ask others (people we trust and respect) to share their opinions. We need to embrace open source methods for “content” development and sharing, leverage it wisely, and find more and better ways to learn from our networks or communities. What would you say if I told you that I know where you can find some FREE , HIGH QUALITY , and REUSABLE courses, modules, and lesson plans?  I I guess your answer depends on who you are.  A

I am often asked by business leaders to describe what we intend to measure in order to understand, manage, and improve the networked (or social) learning eco-system.  There is interest in knowing how we will prove networked learning, turn potential chaos into something that is more certain and efficient, and to get some kind of “history” about the learning and development for individuals and organizations. We do not want to take a traditional ‘Learning Management System” appraoch and treat networked learning as formal training. Next is a list of

Workers using social networking sites instead of doing their jobs has long been the bane of human resources departments across every industry.   However, a recent survey questioning oil and gas professionals has revealed that 40% of them believe that companies who encourage the use of social media tools, including social networking sites such as Facebook, to share knowledge and information would boost productivity. Companies have an opportunity to supplement their existing collaboration capabilities with newer tools such as podcasts and social networks to accelerate the sharing
Below is a simple model for explaining how social learning will help us grow networks.  When we consume information, we can trace back to the people who made the contributions and capture them for our network.  When we contribute information, others will trace back to us and we will get captured into their network. We are in control of our learning Our network provides guidance and support

The support for WiFi also makes for developing multiplayer learning games that can be used in groups or individually on the same network. The iPad is here. After all the hype, which it didn’t quite live up to, there was a lot of commentary web-wide on whether it’s suitable for elearning, or a specific type of learning. Here at Upside our camp is divided, there are iPad lovers and there are iPad baiters.

In a past post I elaborated on social networks like Twitter as being a Help engine; an alternative to a search engine in some cases in finding answers and making decisions. by connecting you to a social network of people you trust who will be willing to help out in a reciprocal relationship (which which also helps out in the re-contextualising process as you share a common wavelength or level I also paralleled this concept to the aims of KM, productivity, performance, sense-making, decision-making, etc: “I think it’s getting us closer to the KM productivity (sense-making) aim that knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer has always aspired to, which is:

has released a research report on the use of online social networking by students, titled Creating and Connecting (caution: it’s a pdf file). While some of the findings are not surprising, some others are. Here’s a quick take on some of the findings. Overall, an astonishing 96 percent of students with online access report that they ever used any social networking technologies, such as chatting, text messaging, blogging and visiting online communities… Staggering as the 96 percent statistic is, it is intriguing to wonder what the other 4 percent is doing. I have been giving a “Social Media/Networking 101″ class here at NASA as an educational and evangelical tool.  Social Media and Social Networking.  Social Media and Social Networking, I point out, is the focus:  the first focuses on content, the second the people and the third, networking. Duh.  You would think that after all that I have read, all that I have practiced, all the classes and conference sessions and keynotes I have given, that I would have understood this point.
I personally believe that one of the areas where learning professionals need the most help is how communities and networks impact learning and building individual and facilitation skills around these: Knowing how to individually leverage Network Skills and Communities to help with work and learning tasks Community and Network Facilitation Skills to help others learn and work using networks and communities In my post Networks and Learning Communities , I looked a bit at this topic. But, I by no means consider myself an expert and find that I
