I have seen people learn about Ning and putting up a Ning for their family reunions and sports clubs. Experimenting is fun, having to use new tool because you have to is boring. Offer them a set of tools and shortcuts, work on their own computers. That's a great way to learn and become enthusiastic. Shape the path.

The tools are there to make these things happen. Ning really makes it easy to do one of these. You can add a Wiki or Aggregator or other things to make this a bit better.
