already have spoke ad naseum about the pros and cons of any free open source platform, so my criteria on what I feel are the best 10 free open source systems are presented below. The reason I state “free” open source, is because “open source” itself is not necessarily free. I’m not talking about your customization of it, rather that with some companies they charge for you to use their open source code. Some free open source platforms, have moved over to fee based systems.

I would say open source, but there are systems that provide open source and they are not free. Thus free open source (a proper way) or some platform that is free. I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Here’s some of what I pulled out.

One of them: open source. The question was: should EasyGenerator become open source or should it stay proprietary. In the end we decided not to go for the open source model en in this blog I will try to explain why. When I worked at Stoas Learning we represented a few open source packages ( Sakai , Moodle and Mahara ). My open source experience is therefore mainly based on these three.

What has been applying is the term mobile learning and how it it pitched to consumers in the e-learning sector, especially with LMS/LCMS/Learning platform vendors. Mobile learning is not just seeing the LMS (or LCMS or platform) via a mobile browser. Under this mobile learning misrepresentation, I can tell you that nearly every system out there – can make this argument – because if you can open up Safari and go to the vendor’s web site and then into your SaaS based LMS – then guess what? Click on the app and your default browser opens and off you go.

The Mozilla Foundation has already implemented the open source Ogg Theora and Ogg Vorbis codecs for video in the beta of Firefox 3.5 Now we have HTML 5 coming up – this makes the race hotter. Or does it? So what’s the big deal ?
