The book I chose was, to be fair, a short one, the intriguingly titled Open Source Instructional Design by Nathan Eckel (IntelliDesign, 2009). I cannot see Nathan’s open source model being appropriate for top-end interventions, where there may well be an element of guided discovery (scenarios, sims, etc.)

Open source and additional tools. iSpring Free is basically a PowerPoint presentation plus a quiz, but this might be an option for simple samples. If you want to use open source tools, check out Adapt and H5P. If you storyboard and plan before you start your trial, you can make several samples during that month.

If you are thinking of Scorm creation, I would recommend building on PowerPoint and using an add-in to convert to basic SCORM. When you think of creating eLearning, you are thinking of SCORM modules or a full platform. If you can afford it though, Articulate and Captivate are spectacular for authoring.

Honestly, PowerPoint is a decent tool for simple image editing. I often use PowerPoint to remove backgrounds or make other quick changes. I use the open source tool Audacity for audio editing. OpenShot is a free, open source video editor. I use Camtasia for screen recording and video editing.
