This week’s featured system is OutStart. By way of background, Jeff told me that OutStart has two flavors: Participate, their general social software solution and TrainingEdge.com, their SaaS solution which includes LMS, collaborative authoring, and social media specifically configured to support learning.

ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference. Adobe Dreamweaver - creating web pages and occasionally jerry-rigging the HTML in courses. Adobe Fireworks - editing graphics. SnagIt - grabbing screenshots.

DHTML authoring tool - My preference is OutStart Trainer (TrainerSoft). Adobe Dreamweaver - Still the best tool for creating web pages (I occasionally have to do that) and jerry-rigging the HTML in courses. Being able to add quizzes and publish SCORM/AICC compliant courses is a big plus too. It gets me out of my e-learning vacuum.

When you look back at 2000-2002, companies getting VC funding were folks like Outstart, Hyperwave, Infocast, Element K, Pathlore, Vuepoint, Knowledge Impact. They are going after things like: specialized tools and content that meet particular industry or audience needs games and simulations web 2.0

I'm hoping to do a lot of case studies over the next 6-12 months looking at interesting examples of the use of social/informal/web 2.0 They asked what web sites the sales teams liked. MSNBC, CNN and ESPN were good Web sites and simple to use. They looked at several different portal options and chose OutStart Participate.
