This makes using something like google docs or pbwiki as an experiment somewhat difficult for the poor, lonely learning professional. Is it okay for a learning professional to be unaware at this point of social media and its impact on learning and work? I'm not sure I buy this.

I recommend pbWiki as an easy to use Wiki solution. In addition to the real-time editing described above, it also has notifications of changes to people who are collaborating on the document. For some (inexplicable) reason, Google Docs does not. I also heavily use Wikis, especially when the desired result is a set of web pages.
