In terms of attitudinal training and soft skills, it’s important to know that a person with an emotional bias may be unwilling to accept facts that cause unpleasant feelings or to believe facts that cause positive feelings, even when there is clear evidence to the contrary. A moderate challenge is optimally motivating.

Sifting through talented narrators to assess all these skills and selecting the right person can be an overwhelming task. Listen carefully, imagine this person reading your script and pick out the top two or three people to analyze in more detail. Can this person sound sufficiently caring to narrate a course about cancer treatments?

Consider adding personality. Sometimes it is appropriate to add humor and personality to microcopy. Although it should fit in well with the surrounding interface, your words need to be noticed. Plan ahead to ensure there is enough space for placing the copy where it can be seen.

Personally, I think Charles and Audrey from the UK are brilliant. For example, text to speech software is certainly a viable approach for providing accessibility to visually impaired persons. Do you like Paul and Kate or are you fond of Mike and Crystal? But there are times when this option is worth exploring.

My personal favorites include renaming Social Media to Knowledge Media and to just start using it without telling anyone (beg for forgiveness later). Ensure It Solves A Business Need.

In other words, adults need personal relevance in learning activities. They prefer to partake in learning activities that help them reach their goals. Adults in the workplace prefer practical knowledge and experiences that will make work easier or provide important skills. Competence and mastery. Learning by experience.

Personally, I like to use 4 options. Making the number of options consistent from question to question makes it easier for learners to know what to expect. Research doesn’t seem to agree on whether 3 or 4 or 5 options is best. It feels fair. Rule #9: Avoid tricking test-takers. As faulty as they are, tests exist to measure knowledge.

That’s when I decided I would personally define some of the most important terms and theories in our field and invest in a programmer to turn it into a native iPhone app. Feeling lazy, it seemed as though it would be so easy to just look up the taxonomy on my mobile device. I went to iTunes and couldn’t find any app like this.

Also, cognitive researchers now know that the capacity of working memory depends on the type of information, the features of the information and the abilities of the person under experimentation. The pearl of wisdom here is that if a learner’s working memory is full, the excess information will just drop out—as in disappear.

Personally, I found my Educational Statistics textbook to be an excellent sleeping pill. ). You can’t make it through a year of designing eLearning without having to write test questions at some point. It’s A Measuring Instrument.

Personally, I even have a prepared speech about the limits of what people can retain. Designers have their own throw-away reflex. As soon as we’re given a brain dump of information, we automatically come up with ways to organize and slim things down. It’s an instinct.

It might seem like one person wrote the entire test. A test that is reliable will have a degree of consistency evidenced by these characteristics: The test items seem similar or highly related. The test comes together as one whole. There are no great leaps in difficulty, wording and tone.

When information is meaningful, it’s connected to one’s personal network of knowledge. When a learner holds information associated with the instruction in working memory, it helps the instruction make sense and gives it meaning. Well-connected information is more likely to get encoded “deeply into long-term memory.
