Plateau is long gone and buried and people should realize that. Or better yet, let me provide you with some details. Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. A LMS should first be a LMS. Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. The first stage of integrating this content is to simply provide links to individual content items that are housed in the LMS. Many LMS vendors provide this capability. And it can be really important if you want to create web sites outside the LMS that might provide context to a set of courses in the LMS. With deep links in Plateau, users can launch content in two or three clicks.

True, HR at some companies provide “training”, but I have found it is always better to have the two entities as separate departments. Oracle then followed suit by acquiring SuccessFactors who had acquired Plateau in the past. Oracle in short fashion soon made an announcement that employee recruitment, training and management tools would merge with Fusion, which is a Human Capital management software.  I’m sure the people who had purchased Plateau or even SuccessFactors Learning system were delighted to hear the news. Vendors nowadays provide training early on after you get the product, and then assume that the person will remember everything weeks later.  If not, they have a user guide – which is sometimes so lengthy or missing key information, that the person is left guessing. We are user friendly. Very easy to use. Simple, easy to use. Our customers find our system user friendly and easy to use. We never hear complaints. We have the highest repeat customers in the industry. We are user oriented. Poor or non-existent user intuitiveness/interfaces.

Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). Normally, I wouldn’t provide a specific breakout, say Big Dog or Small Dog, but people ask me whom I like or dislike, etc. Otherwise, you get bleech, IMO.   If you are seeking TM as your focus and you want one of the big dogs – I found Plateau’s system to offer appropriate functionality for it, but found some real concern in other areas (see my product review).  Your competitors are not always the Big Dogs – Learn.com, Saba, Plateau, etc. These standout to me.
