eLearning Portal Integration

Tony Karrer

Initially, the conversation was about having learning content appear on the enterprise portal. Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. Assuming that your learning audience regularly visits the enterprise portal, then its great to be able to show employees upcoming learning events, training requirements, content that might be of interest, or other similar things. The interface is not really even the enterprise Portal. Great move SumTotal!

Best of the Best – Extended Enterprise or multi-tenant LMSs

eLearning 24-7

Just because a system lists itself as an extended enterprise does not mean it comes with multiple domains (which with some vendors includes customized) nor with multiple portals or my preferable term – “multi-tenant” You may see an “extended enterprise” which not only refers to the company’s employees, but also their customers and channel partners. Multi-Tenant: Some people refer to it as portals and sub-portals. You may heard the term, “extended enterprise” and immediately thought to yourself that it does not apply to you.

Parental portal, student portal, teacher portal (education systems). Multi-tenet, multi-portal and extended enterprise (basically it is all the same thing). People often ask me why I seem to dog the big players in the space, ala SumTotal, Cornerstone and alike. LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. These expand past the standard feature sets, which I call 90/10. This is to say that 90% of features most folks seek are nearly universal in a LMS – low cost or otherwise.

SumTotal is coming out with a new UI for their learning module in August. I also learned that the “portal” example they show in their demo is with two or more modules, that most people do not buy all the modules, and that you can see the product – as much as you want – without being qualified (this is in reference to an internal salesperson via a phone conversation at SumTotal who told me that in order to see the product you have to be qualified). Speaking of SumTotal, whoever showed me the product should get a raise! EXTRA! EXTRA! Pluses.
