Running Turnitin for Moodle

There were some technical difficulties with getting the installation to actually work in our version of Moodle , but I am more than pleased to say that Turnitin were really helpful in getting over those problems. We finally had it up and running by Monday 28 Oct, so not a lot of time as it turned out to put those training materials together.

The video has really caused me to stop and think around the whole idea of collaborative eLearning and the problem we are possibly inflicting upon ourselves it seems with issues of plagarism. The other day I came across a video from the Ted talk series, where Sugata Mitra was presenting the results from new experiments in self-teaching.

Training starts for 2013

On this occasion though I hit a problem. Having mentioned technical glitches we did experience one. When embedding a YouTube video into a package I have always made use of the ''Share/ Embed and Use old embed code'' option. First off the ‘Use old embed code’ simply was not there, so OK find another example and use that.

Web Conferencing with OpenMeetings

We did try a couple of the free web based services for this, but ran into some problem s with privacy and to a certain extent security. One of the recent project proposals that I received this term was for the use of a webcam based conferencing system. Anyway we began dig around on the web and found OpenMeetings.

Blog but beware

A problem developed recently following some postings from a particular student. For one, given the removal of the Journal facility in Moodle it is good to still have an easy means by which students can record their progress, thoughts and findings etc. Second, publishing to anyone on this site is literally that.

New round of training starts

The problem appeared to be that if staff were slow to take up use of the vle fairly soon following the training, they seemed to loose confidence and I found them returning to the course again the next term or later.
