The nice people at One Productions have built this infographic that illustrates this point. I have sat through many 50 minute lectures in my life. Notice how I wrote that sentence "sat through". was I always engaged? Probably not. Is it realistic to be engaged for a full 50 minute block? Probably not. So how does one go about maximizing engagement in a distance course with video.

In my view it all comes down to how you envision the finished product meeting the needs of your target market. Use a print-based framework for your finished product; however, augment the print-based material with short audio-video tutorials (created with Adobe Captivate) that show students the piece of software in action. In a recent round table meeting of five Universities that I attended in Ottawa on the subject of LCMSs, all five Universities had decided to continue pursuing commercially available LCMSs instead of Open Source products like Moodle or SAKAI because they had judged it to be more cost effective in the medium and long term. The cool thing about Moodle isnt that its a "free" option to throw into the mix when evaluating LCMS products. Youre assuming that all LCMSs are the identical products and are going to remain identical products. Advantage #2: The code is FREE!
