New eLearning Projects Approved

Well I am pleased to say that the eLearning project proposals have all been approved. We are currently in the process of generating an instance of Open Simulator for one and the iPad’s will be arriving soon for the other. One late request was from myself for the acquisition by the college of a licence for Wimba Create. For those of you out there who remember courseGenie, Create is the new incarnation. This is in fact all part of our phased Moodle rollout, detail below. So a busy time ahead and of course some more frequent postings to this blog and of course to our blog for Open Sim

admit we do not at present actually run this ourselves, but I would be interested in hearing from any of you out there in Moodle land who do, it does seem to be a nicely presented and interfaced product. As I recall, it was at least few ago now that I first started to hear the term Student Analytics banded around in the corridors of eLearning, around the time of the 2012 Horizon Report.

One of my courses this year is in Website Production, and I was interested to see that the design stage included a moodboard, I was a little unclear about exactly what that meant exactly, so I decided to make a start with Wikipedia. Of course I then anticipate the next question from my students, what should we use to create a moodboard. Olioboard is a free web based “moodboard creator”.

If the institute make use of a licensed product, as we do, then students either have to purchase it, or make use of a freeware or trial version. So if you find yourself teetering on the edge of getting onvolved with SL, this video should give you some confidence in the likely persistent nature of the product. Anyway I built a Spot, and trialed it with my students with really encouraging results. But again be reassured, we have been running SL in one lab for around 18 months now and no problems.

The down side of course is that being a licensed product captivate will cost you money, the upside being, it actually works.!!! Should you be a regular reader of this blog, then you will no doubt have picked up that we have experienced a number of aspiring highs and avalanching lows in our attempts to deploy Scorm materials.

So how about a microblogging system that has been designed specifically for teachers and students? If you have not seen it yet, then take a look at Edmodo. Students on the other hand can belong to multiple groups.

Our ECDL course team, who in recent times have been making very productive use of Smart Groups for their communication with remote working students, have as a result of growing problems incurred through increasingly long delays in message delivery, have requested a Moodle account as a replacement system.

Up until now Moodle induction for students has been carried out by either IT lecturers or e-Learning Contacts, but this year’s new intake by necessity will be inducted by staff across the board, which has required the production of more extensive notes.

Whether you are selling products or ideas it makes some thought provoking predictions with regard to the adoption of new technology. The end of this term will mark the completion of phase one for our Moodle rollout and staff numbers are currently just over 100. always had a concern, borne out of experience I must add, that the numbers just would not materialise to make the second and third phases a going proposition. Basically you have to get past that minimum, which is what you may ask? And please feel free to get back and share you own experiences on this one

A very promising visit from another local college of FE and HE with regard to Moodle uptake, it seems almost certain that they will elect to make use of the VLE in favour of other products. I am also having some success in the area of six form colleges, with invites to visit IT managers and members of senior management teams on the subject

Blog – This was on the trial and for a nice product like this – it should be removed for the trial. It is sooo boring. While that makes sense, what hurts the product is the overkill of information. know Totara is going to say that the product is built on open source and the folks who are buying it know the technical aspects/Moodle and thus this isn’t an issue.
