Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. There is a wide assumption that if a product sells a lot it means that it is better than anyone else. Think about it.

Anyway, to stop that “traditional” spin, they need a re-brand, something fresh, modern, new attitude approach – I just mean related to the learning system and so forth, not their name for example, rather the product/LOB. Knowledge Arcade makes up 50% of their sales (for 2020), and will likely do at least that for 2021.

And I know folks who leave them are usually unhappy for various reasons, but I can tell you that I have had two in-depth meetings with SumTotal including one with the VP of Customer Service/Support and have seen the metrics. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). The product is Flash based, which is nice, but lack of mobile optimization for the iPad.

Many authoring tools have removed the ability to use storyboards as part of their product, but talk to any instructional designer or e-learning developer and a storyboard is a very useful tool. On the home page the product is able to recommend courses based on what courses have been started and completed – per user. While the UI is vastly improved, on the admin side it needs a slight touch – but don’t get wrong the product is doable and nice. Feature wise this product is fantastic. Video editing.

Ask yourself, how many times have you bought a product or even thought about it, when the website looked dated or just plain awful? These are consumers, just like you and me.
