The substance of this appeared to be copying out BASIC programs from a handout and then seeing if they ran. You need to know how to program to use a computer? In the first instance, some 20 years ago, one of my relatives took a computer appreciation course. I don’t think so.

As Itiel explained in his talk, we are programmed to respond to bad experiences (or the bad experiences of those we observe). Many of these will have arisen from our own experience, some by observing the experiences of others, others through experiences deliberately set up by coaches and learning designers to encourage us to learn.

phone2learn is just too late

You call up and, using voice recognition, you engage in a ‘learning conversation’ with either a recorded voice or a text-to-speech program. You’ve got a phone (any sort will do) and you know the number to call if you find yourself unable to remember what to do. You’re provided with the information you need in easy stages, step-by-step.

This is obviously a concern although it did not spoil the course as a whole: Scores for frustration with regard to the perception of participating in an appropriate and satisfying training program showed that the majority of respondents felt little effect. None of the participants responded that they felt very effected.

After all, we are programmed to be on the lookout for things that are changing in our environment, so we know whether to fight, run like hell, lick our lips anticipating a tasty meal or put on all our charms to entice a prospective mate - in other words, a typical day in the office.
