And isn’t content sourced from some of the world’s best providers a giant leap in that direction? Universities will finally accept they are service providers. Content providers will charge for assessment. MOOCs get a bad rap. Ka ching! | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR JANUARY 12, 2010 Taxonomy of Learning Theories Models of memory provide the foundation for subsequent cognitivist theories that (arguably) have more direct implications for instructional design. . In particular, the simplest (or epitomised) version of the domain should be provided initially, and elaborated upon subsequently. Academia is teeming with learning theories. Some of them are old, some of them are new. Where do you start? | | | | | | | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR MARCH 16, 2009 Instructivism, constructivism or connectivism? Whether in a classroom setting, via an online course or otherwise, the resident subject matter expert (SME) within the organisation typically provides the learner with a programmed sequence of knowledge, carefully scaffolding their learning and – to adopt a cognitivist view – construct a basic framework of knowledge in the learner’s mind. In a previous article , I provided the following examples of potential information sources that the learner could incorporate into their personal learning network: Social bookmarks. Instructivism is dead. Slippery slope. The real world. | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR JULY 7, 2010 Online courses must die! The facilitator should provide a learning plan for novice learners which defines a sequence of study, identifying specific resources among the potentially overwhelming array of options. A touch dramatic, isn’t it? Now that I have your attention, please bear with me. There’s method in my madness… The myth of rapid authoring. But you know what? The best of both worlds. | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR DECEMBER 27, 2008 Connectivism and the modern learner Information comes and goes, but the source of the information will always provide you with the latest and greatest. (That’s Provide case studies illustrating how new information has affected existing situations in the real world. Recently, I read a blog article about connectivism by Debora Gallo. This got me thinking… I don’t know anything about connectivism! | E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR MAY 20, 2012 Informal first Whenever a development intervention is being considered, the primary objective of the L&D professional should be to provide all the necessary learning resources to the target audience in an open, structured format. It is well documented that the vast majority of learning in the workplace is informal. • 10% of learning occurs via formal training (eg classes). Vive la revolution! | | | | | | | | | -
E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2012 The classroom option you should not ignore My point is, under the right circumstances, video can provide effective instruction. I’m sure you know the feeling. You’re sitting in a classroom watching a presentation – which started late to allow the “stragglers” to show up – when about 10 minutes in it dawns on you… What am I doing here? Either you’re already familiar with what’s being presented, or it’s so straight-forward it didn’t require 30 or 60 minutes of your time. It’s such a waste of time – both for you and for the presenter. And you know what? MORE >> -
E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2011 Observations of a Critical Theory newbie I’m going to provide a brief overview of Friesen’s arguments, but then I’m going to do something either incredibly brave or incredibly stupid: point out where I don’t agree with the author – an academic heavyweight about a thousand times more credible than I. How many “facts do we accept at face value? For example, do we really remember 10% of what we hear, 20% of what we see, 50% of what we do …? It’s human nature to accept knowledge that’s universally propagated. Our peers wouldn’t be wrong, right? Hold your horses. MORE >> -
E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2010 Theory-informed design tips • Provide plenty of questions for practice. Provide an epitome of the domain initially, then elaborate. • Provide rich feedback. • Provide your learners with a forum to ask questions and to learn from one another. • Avoid merely listing hyperlinks: instead, provide explanations to help the learner recognise meaningful patterns among them. In this article, I go one step further by listing specific, practical instructional design tips that are informed by those theories. Behaviourist design. Cognitivist design. • Bold key terms. E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR | MONDAY, APRIL 16, 2012 My 15 favourite Australian e-learning bloggers Her e-bites blog provides an honest account of her experiences. Fay Moore made my day when she nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award. I’m still unsure as to whether this is the blogosphere’s version of a chain letter, but in any case it gives me a good excuse to: A) Thank Fay for her support, and. B) Promote other bloggers. According to the VBA Rules I’m supposed to nominate 15 bloggers whom I have recently discovered or follow regularly. Since then, she has joined Dachis Group where she and James Dellow write about social business on the Headshift blog. MORE >> -
E-LEARNING PROVOCATEUR | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2013 The equation for change In the socio-historical context of our time, the demand that providers have for altruism? Guns don’t kill people. People do. It’s a well-worn saying that Americans in particular know only too well. And of course it’s technically correct. don’t fear a gun on the table, but I do fear someone might pick it up and pull the trigger. That’s why I don’t want a gun on the table. Chandler explains that “hard” technological determinism holds technology as the driver of change in society. Like most extremism, however, it’s an absurd construct. MORE >>
