I often have conversations about the role of social media in learning processes. Sometimes people might say: ' Ok, but twitter is not learning. How can you learn from 140 characters?! The theory about learning you embrace determine how you look at social media and its importance (or unimportance). In that case twitter is very important. | JOITSKE HULSEBOSCH ELEARNING FEBRUARY 5, 2012 Brain science meets social media It may provide a strong underpinning for certain ways of working. A screencast is a recording of your computer screen to which you add an explanation by voice- combining it into a video. screencast is a classical way of explaining computer programs and software. You might for instance explain via a screencast how to start a twitter account. Can I make a screencast?! | JOITSKE HULSEBOSCH ELEARNING APRIL 6, 2012 Introducting social media in organisations to improve the learning function is more difficult than you may think. Provide a clear focus, otherwise it quickly becomes vague to people what they are required to do. For some time now, I have an evaluation report of an organization that has experience with the introduction of social media (like wikis and blog) in the organization since 2009. The report is very interesting, because it shows that the actual practice of changing habits in organisations is very hard! They allowed me to blog about it and I think it has some valuable lessons like shape such a process as a real change trajectory (I'm personally convinced about this). enterprise2.0 | JOITSKE HULSEBOSCH ELEARNING APRIL 16, 2012 Social media and reflection: marriage or divorce? Reflection is important for learning because it provides us with insights in what works and what doesn't, it gives us new ideas and new ways to act. Social media (and digital media in general) provide many opportunities to collect data about yourself. Social media in organisations has been a difficult topic and sometimes bothers me. Most of the time a smarter use of media may help. | | | | | | | | | -
5 Essential online survival skills by Howard Rheingold Rheingold provides the example of an online pregnancy test. I bought the book by Howard Rheingold called Net Smart: how to thrive online. It is a guide to digital literacy. haven't had time to read it yet though but next week is autumn holidays here in the Netherlands so I hope to have some time to read it then. Howard Rheingold is said to be one of the first community managers on the web and seems to be walking his talk, which is why I bought his book. In the meantime I found a video with Howard Rheingold about the 21st century skills. The 5 skills he mentions are: Attention. MORE >> -
JOITSKE HULSEBOSCH ELEARNING | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010 Switch for social media Provide crystal-clear direction about where to go (and where not to go) Motivate the elephant. I read the book Switch some time ago. Change management is definitely one of my favorite fields! Even though I am now not using the field as consciously as when I was guiding organisational change trajectories, I feel when I work on introducing social media I may apply it too and could improve. But maybe I already do it unconsciously based on my experiences. First a short intro of the ideas put forward in Switch. The book starts with a short story about moviegoers. And Yes! And here it is! Do you fear technical things? Or what a great mobile provider is in the Netherlands. Image via Wikipedia One time I got a call whether I know what to look for when you buy a laptop. Or people ask if I know how you can make Outlook address list. Things I do not know but apparently I have given them the impression that I might know. People are surprised to discover that I do not know how turn up the volume of my phone too (secretly they are glad too:). Somehow my ICT knowledge is overrated because I work a lot with social media and facilitate online. skype connection fails, a bad sound etc. How do you deal with it? MORE >> -
The dynamics of managing/nurturing networks of practice Image by D'Arcy Norman via Flickr I received a beautiful article (thanks to Julie Ferguson!). Unfortunately it is not freely accessible online, but this is the reference to the article: Agterberg, M., Van den Hooff, B., Huysman, M., & Soekijad, M. 2010). Keeping the Wheels Turning: The Dynamics of Managing Networks of Practice. Journal of Management Studies, 47(1), 85-108 The authors make a distinction between NoPs and CoPs; networks of practice and communities of practice. In their definition CoPs are co-located and NoPs are dispersed. MORE >> -
JOITSKE HULSEBOSCH ELEARNING | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2009 Wiki as repository for a virtual community But it does provide a clear picture of what's possible! Because the email list is a push technology and the wiki more a pull technology, more off-topic discussions can be allowed on the wiki than on the mailing list, hence it provides a space to address wider needs. Through a comment on a blogpost by Nancy White I found this article about a virtual community using a discussion list (listserv) in combination with a wiki. The wiki serves as a collaborative repository. You can access the article here if you want to read it in full. You can track the resources by following [link]. MORE >>
