Key posts include: Donald Clark - flip the classroom, every teacher should do this. Maryna Badenhorst - To flip or not to flip (an excellent analysis). Karl Fisch - We see this as the future of higher education. Salman Khan on TED Talks - Let's use video to reinvent education. It would be complex. Sometimes it would appear chaotic. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS NOVEMBER 26, 2009 From formal courses to social learning Forums and blogs to provide a means of supporting ongoing support. Create or allow open communication channels for your employees to use to request help, suggest ideas and to provide feedback. Following my last post on " Getting started with social software for learning ", I've had a number of conversations about how social learning fits into a more formalised training environment. | | | | | | | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS MARCH 25, 2010 The state of corporate learning and development Alongside the above trends in society, things are also changing in the world of learning and development: We're rethinking the established practice of providing training as a panacea for every performance problem. ". This means using the LMS to get more useful feedback from managers about whether performance has improved following an intervention provided by L&D. Many are free. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS NOVEMBER 13, 2009 Moodle - the wrong tool for the job? Through roles, these same capabilities can be provided to any user (eg students) in the system. allows tutors/trainers to provide a sense of direction, synthesise ideas, coach. Via Jane Hart. George Siemens is discussing whether the future of learning is in Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Social Networking Systems. In his post, George describes Moodle as being one of many "content-centric" systems. Martin Dougiamas (founder of Moodle) then comments: Moodle itself is actually activity-centric. Moodle itself is fairly neutral pedagogically – most things are possible. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS MAY 8, 2012 Creativity, problem finding, education and training Instead, our job should be one that encourages learners to immerse themselves in the problems that surround them, helps them to synthesise the key information relevant to the challenges into connected ideas, facilitates ideation (the process of generating and collecting ideas), and provides tools and materials that will help them to prototype solutions. How did you do that?" Seven. | LEARNING CONVERSATIONS JULY 6, 2010 Learning to change report Over a third of leaders (36%) lack confidence that their employees have the skills required to deliver the firm’s upturn strategy, with close to half (46%) casting doubt on their L&D department’s ability to provide these learning services. We provide training to meet perceived training needs. Solve those, and you won't need to provide training in a lot of cases. Is there still a place, in today's complex and rapidly changing market, for a learning and development function that just sees itself as a provider of training? Today's a case in point. | | | | | | | | | -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2011 A first look at Moodle 2 If you're more like me, and prefer to provide a scaffolded learner experience with free access to resources, then you'll want to use this with care. It provided a way of creating a set of HTML pages very quickly. I've been using Moodle 2.0 in anger for a few months now, and thought it was time to put down a few thoughts about how it differs from Moodle 1.x. At the moment, I would say I'm only scratching the surface of Moodle 2's functionality. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes changes that I'm just not touching at all (eg. Conditional Activities. In Moodle 1.x In Moodle 2.0 MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009 Getting started with social software for learning This is to be achieved by providing tools that allow people to make connections with each other, collaborate on work and share knowledge. Many of these sites provide feeds for content that has been categorised or tagged in a particular way. Most allow people to provide feedback through the use of comments on the content. You might provide negative feedback, which may challenge their thinking. Or you might provide positive feedback which reaffirms their thinking. The educational technology community provides many excellent examples of collaboration in practice. MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2012 Characteristics of good elearning Of course, if your learners already want to learn all you need to do is provide them with instruction and information. You may as well ask "What makes a good book?" when thinking about the characteristics of good elearning. It depends on what it's trying to achieve, who it's aimed at, and the context in which it will be used. Are we talking about a novel, a textbook, a reference, a coffee table book, a children's picture book, etc? Nevertheless, I'm going to try. This thought process started during the recent Midlands Learning Tweetup. It's not easy! Desirable. Thought-provoking. Sticky. MORE >> -
LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2012 Highly cost effective video-based learning The editing process consisted simply of trimming the shots where necessary, joining them together with (subtle) transitions, recording the commentary (whilst still keeping the sounds recorded during the filming to provide an audio backdrop), and then adding the titles. You've identified a learning need. Let's say you need people to know the best way to use a particular piece of equipment. In this case, there is only one way to use it, and the aim is to save people time rather than get them to understand the disadvantages of using it wrongly. How will you edit the video? Recording. LEARNING CONVERSATIONS | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2008 Learning Conversations - SCORM warning SCORM is just about delivering content, tracking its use and providing an overall pass/fail score. There are some examples of extremely sophisticated SCORM-based simulations, which work well with a particular LMS, provide useful information to managers, and offer a valid learning experience for learners. And I dont think you can argue that SCORM content is providing the revenue stream. When asked why they want this, and to what level of compliance, often the answer is a blank look. What is SCORM? SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. SCORM 1.2 MORE >>
