NOVEMBER 6, 2012
For my own classes this academic year, I have provided links to both eBook libraries and specific publications with the result that predictably, perhaps, very little by way of actual physical books appearing, but is this always the case. After all, there is little savings to be found in many digital textbooks. Please feel free to comment

Though I always try to avoid cross-posting, which is why I am only providing a link to my OpenSim blog here, this week saw my HE students begin their adventures on a virtual field trip to Isidis Planitia, that’s on the surface of Mars, and not by coincidence landing point of the Beagle spacecraft well it is in OpenSim anyway. Being a merged college as we are, we now have two instances of the Moodle running on a single server and it all seems to be holding up extremely well. Please feel free to comment on these postings, regards Barrys
Creately Web Based Diagramming Tool
OCTOBER 28, 2011
You will find that in creating a new document the examples list will provide sets of templates, some of which seem to be partially complete, these would be particularly useful for teaching. A little bit of cross posting between my blogs here but if you have use for a diagramming tool and not come across Creately yet, then I think it is well worth paying a visit to the site. regards Barry

Well worth a Listen
APRIL 9, 2014
Not too surprising there was one case where the application of technology was seen as a means to leverage outcomes while at the same time providing opportunities to rationalise resources, as in teachers, mmm. this final episode features a lively debate from a good cross section of interested parties. now that one was a surprise that I was most certainly not expecting.

The mythologies of eLearning
JANUARY 21, 2013
Well start of the new year here and time to commence some new work on e-Learning, a term that I must confess I am looking forward in many ways to replacing or at least redefining. None the less there is little doubt what so ever in my own mind and indeed from experience and evidence that technology can and should be used to extend our classrooms.

Lets try audio
SEPTEMBER 26, 2012
Depending upon your own approach to providing feedback, whether you read the whole document first or comment a section at a time, moving over to audio really makes little difference. Well back into the swing with the vle for the new academic year and time to try out some new I thought. Are there any specialist skills that need to be learned? Is it time/cost effective?
Newsletter,feedback and eMaterials
JANUARY 31, 2012
One aspects of eLearning that I have been very keen to get established is a newsletter. Apart from raising awareness for everyone regarding those things that are actually taking place with eLearning at the college, I also felt that it could act as a link to resources and news items in the e-digital world in general. To that end I have been working on a short feedback system based on a Moodle Quiz.

Migration, Migration As part of the college merger project, the Christmas break has been used to migrate Orpington College Moodle vle away from hosting with ULCC and onto our own internal servers, a move that involved a change from unix/Linux to Windows. The next stage will be the move from our current Bromley College vle from our own Linux to Windows server.

The thrust behind the proposal is that for some students, finding themselves timetabled into rooms with no computing facilities, wouldn’t it be a good idea to provide some low cost, low spec netbooks and make use of the college WiFi provide access to web resources including Cloud apps. Techno rant but not really
JULY 8, 2011
I was at little gathering recently when I overheard a conversation between delegates from a college who had apparently made the case that engagement and achievement would be improved simply by providing students with access to the very latest technologies. So you are going to throw a shed load of money at it, and that basically is it, and this is going to work? Food for discussion?
Creating a Moodboard
DECEMBER 6, 2010
The application provides you with a canvas to create your board on, the facility to upload your own images and you get some basic editing tools, and to save the final version as a jpeg. OK that is a lot clearer now, but I need to see one really, so try YouTube and up comes this really instructive tutorial on making a moodboard for a website, really nice, and thanks to David Perel for that.

End of Year Conference
MAY 26, 2012
I was asked this week to provide a short session on using our Moodle vle for the for our end of year Teaching and Learning Conference here at the College. As you will have read from other posts on this blog I am taking every opportunity to provide the widest expose possible for Wimba Create this academic year, so the second half is sorted. The idea seems to be that the session should address the interests of basic users in the first half and those more experienced practitioners whishing to move on to something more ambitious in the second. Flipping the class with Ed Ted
MAY 8, 2012
Well after your material has been shared, you simply log-in to the service and see who viewed the lesson, the number of questions they attempted, the answers they provided, in the case of multiple choice questions, even the incorrect responses; though it seems this last feature does require permissions from the student. Not so much about Moodle in this blog post, but of equal importance materials that you can use as part of your course. The attraction here soon becomes obvious, because now you can select a video from the Ted Flipped library and use it as a ready to go online lesson.

Having received the assignment, as a teacher you can then provide scoring and feedback. Are you trying to Twitter with students, I like to, but network filtering has started to become more than a problem of late. So how about a microblogging system that has been designed specifically for teachers and students? If you have not seen it yet, then take a look at Edmodo. In essence similar to Twitter, but with some functionality to support classroom activities. Students on the other hand can belong to multiple groups.
