To that end, last night, I threw students into the 3D virtual world of Second Life. purposefully did little instruction and then sent them off to explore the world and comment on the learning aspects of different places they had visited. Every now and again I wonder about the multi-user 3D environments, or virtual worlds that were all the rage just a couple of years ago, the finest example being Second Life. Second Life itself was a promising collaborative 3D learning platform. Secondly, deploying such systems is one thing, developing content for them is another cost altogether.

Not a Good Week for the Virtual Worlds Space

First, Metaplace announced it will be closing its virtual doors on January 1, 2010 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. This was one of the alternatives I listed for something other than Second Life in my Alternatives to Second Life (continued, again) I described Metaplace as: Is a Flash-based virtual world platform that allows players to buy and sell items, own property and play online games. This means that a user created "portal" into a virtual world can be accessed from web location. Now we are seeing it in the Virtual World space.

The other day I had an opportunity to catch up with Randy Hinrichs and ask him a few questions about the state of 3D virtual world software and about his new book. Also, he has just finished a book about 3D virtual worlds that you should really check out. Randy is also faculty at the University of Washington, where he developed and teaches the Certificate in Virtual Worlds in the iSchool. Last night the class ventured into VirtualU for a tour hosted by Jim and Steve Parker who have created a virtual platform build on Active Worlds. Then we began our tour of the virtual world.

Recently, I received a some really good questions related specifically to Second Life but primarily are about virtual worlds and the use of these worlds for education. Having said that, people are now starting to publish some research articles and case studies about Second Life but it is still relatively new. mostly for socializing. have to agree.

We had a lot to cover from how to navigate in Second Life to simple scripting with building, teleporting and designing Second Life training solutions in between. He was poised and well spoken and he knows Second Life very well. One audience member gave a great account of how he is using Second Life to reproduce a critical incident at a power plant.
