If you have ever done Maya, Blender 3D, or Studio Max, then you can appreciate how much easier it is to build in Second Life. Of course, if that is your background, you may be more likely to also snub Second Life as a 3D animation tool. If you measure the success of your 3D skills in the number of people able to view it and experience it first hand, then there are far more successful people in Second Life than in Maya...What happens when a beaver in Second Life has time to explore?

The National Defense University in Washington, D.C., for example, is experimenting with virtual conference rooms in Second Life. However, network security administrators are less then thrilled with videogames on their systems, which is why the DIA had to purchase standalone laptops so the games are kept separate from the main computer network...

Another important skill I see coming out of that environment is simply “being in the moment.” Particularly in Second Life where the roleplaying is free form, you learn to adapt to another avatar’s assumptions and expectations on the spot. You have the resources of the Internet at your beck and call in that environment–your brain, so to speak, is enlarged and in that moment, you are tested to use that bigger brain.... These games are called serious games.

When the "Second Life as Teaching Environment" fails due to randomness of value and experience, people will say, "Ah, avatars! Not so good after all."
