It uses a RESTful web Server (and yes, I had to ask what this is: a more commonly adopted web service architecture. Shift is a collaboration, server-based authoring environment (this means your stuff lives in the “cloud”, allowing a geographically diverse team to work on the same project at the same time). It’s not cheap, but server-based collaborative tools do run more expensive than desk-tops tools.

Using videos to assess sales skills – video gets uploaded to a server and the certified teachers evaluate the skills. Can take notes and annotate the guides and then send them to yourself at the end of the week. Training dept refreshes the ipad at the end of the week. Remember that you can’t always hit home runs. Start measuring!).

Long term memory is like a server farm. My live notes from session at ASTDTK12 with @elearningcoach. We can hold 4-5 bits of info in working memory (this is based on newer researcher – the old info was 7 +/- 2 bits…) Rather than concentrate on pushing facts on our learners, we should concentrate on what they have to DO.

Low start up costs helped us out (no licensing fees; minimal server requirements). Compared it to a # of diff open source offerings as well as large commercial systems and smaller vendors as well. Decided would rather spend money on support and implementation rather than licensing.

Based on comments in article in 2008 published in Educational Technology -- 4 major roles or functions that tech has got to server for this new paradigm to be successful: 1. The expert forgets the challenges when first starting to learn a subject. Technology needs to play a different role. We need to keep track of what students have mastered.
