Simulator brings the reality of political decision-making to life

East Sussex County Council has created a simulator which members of the public can use to have their own go at deciding where the budget cuts should come. I’ve always thought this sort of simulator would be a good idea. Apparently the simulator cost less than £5000 to develop. You can try it for yourself here.

Insights: Assessment is changing

Automated, computer-based assessment does a pretty good job of testing for knowledge and certain cognitive skills, but it is going to tell you nothing about a person's attitude, interpersonal skills or motor skills (unless you've got some pretty impressive simulator doing the job).

For example, a blend could easily include the following: Coaching from a manager or specialist coach (non-formal/20) Workshops in a physical or virtual classroom (formal/10) E-learning tutorials / scenarios / simulations / serious games (formal/10) Use of forums, wikis, blogs, etc.

Putting it bluntly: business games seem to work

It’s important to make clear that all three of the games ( Industry Giant II, Zapitalism, Virtual U ) were essentially business simulations. Point 1 above could be explained by the fact that the older group had much greater life experience and therefore was less in need of a simulation to help them understand the dynamics of business.

Level 3 e-learning : Highly interactive, possibly including simulations or games, custom interactivity, potentially award-winning. Level 1 e-learning : Bryan characterises this as simple content pages and test questions. Level 2 e-learning : includes many more practical exercises and a liberal use of multimedia.
