Many of you reading this will already have participated in some form of virtual classroom learning. In its more mortal guise, the virtual classroom is an application of web conferencing technology. So if you’ve ever participated in a webinar, perhaps hosted by one or two instructors taking you through a PowerPoint presentation, you have already been initiated into the world of virtual learning. Following in their wake, the virtual classroom is increasingly discussed and used as a tool for workplace learning. | E-LEARNING ACADEMY NOVEMBER 19, 2011 Upcoming presentation: Design and facilitating participatory webinars Just a quick post to say Colleen Kavanagh and I will be presenting at the National Simulation-Based Training and Virtual Learning Conference in Melbourne on Monday 28th November, 2011. Our topic: Virtual Classroom – It’s all about participation. Announcement Virtual classroomFor those who are unable to atttend, I will summarise our experience next week. | THE ELEARNING COACH NOVEMBER 19, 2009 Games And Simulations Karl Kapp, professor, author and speaker, understands the value of games and simulations in learning. In this two-part interview, Karl covers everything from video games to virtual 3D worlds, their cognitive advantages and future trends in online learning. Coach: How did you become an evangelist for learning through games, simulations and gadgets? At that point, it hit me. | TAKE AN E-LEARNING BREAK JANUARY 26, 2012 ASTD Essentials Series: Essentials of Experiential Learning and Simulations Experience is the Best Teacher – Using Simulations to Build Experience Ken Spero, Executive Director, NexLearn - Immersive Learning University Are you interested in developing simulations but don’t have the time to go to a workshop or conference? You and your fellow classmates will collaborate in the virtual classroom via interactive group discussions, polls, chats, and whiteboards. This interactive online workshop introduces you to a simple framework for simulations, which combine one’s work experience and expertise with the power of storytelling. | | | | | | | | | -
CLARK ALDRICH | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2009 Virtual Worlds, Simulations, and Games for Education: A Unifying View I wrote this article for Innovate magazine a few months ago, to coincide with the release of Learning Online with Games, Simulations, and Virtual Worlds. They sense an overlap between virtual worlds, games, and simulations, and yet they know that one is not synonymous with the other. Figure 1: ProtoSphere Virtual World Yet as I have argued elsewhere ( Aldrich 2009 ), the differences are profound. In contrast, simulations use rigorously structured scenarios carefully designed to develop specific competencies that can be directly transferred into the real world. MORE >> -
CLARK ALDRICH | SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2009 Virtual Worlds, Games, and Simulations: The Challenges of the Next Five Years 2009: Understanding and Procuring forms of Highly Interactive Virtual Environments Organizations will continue to explore their understanding of Highly Interactive Virtual Environments. They will seek to resolve the differences in structure, use, best practices, and metrics between virtual worlds , serious game , and educational simulations. More organizations will purchase access to virtual worlds. Students and teachers will expect the smooth ramp up and ramp down between the real world, the open virtual world, the fun game, and the relevant simulation. MORE >> -
CLIVE ON LEARNING | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2010 How long does it take to create e-learning? Bryan asked respondents to provide estimates for four categories of project: Instructor-led training (ILT) : A useful comparison to the e-learning, but also a reasonable guide to what it would take to develop sessions for the virtual classroom. Level 3 e-learning : Highly interactive, possibly including simulations or games, custom interactivity, potentially award-winning. I often get asked how long it takes to create a piece of e-learning. He also asked what the cost of this work was at internal rates. MORE >> -
KAPP NOTES | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2009 Advantages of 3D for Learning Some thoughts on the advantages of 3D environments ( virtual worlds) for learning. Experienced learners can explore more possibilities of dialogue than in a scripted simulation. Advantage of 3D Worlds Over Virtual Classroom Learners stay more focused (not as likely to check email). Advantages of 3D Immersive Learning Learner cues on visual, auditory and spatial elements of 3D environment which leads to better recall and application of learning. Learner rehearses on-the-job behavior in an environment as close to job environment as possible. Am I on the right track? MORE >> -
