Right? --------------­--------------­--- Project: Create an Intro to SkillPort program Participants: Sid (not her real name) , Sally (not her real name either) , the Veteran (our senior trainer and an absolute PRO at teaching folks nervous about computers, not his real name) and me. He would have seen tears of joy at hearing those words from him! --------------­--------------­--------------­ A significant amount of time was spent just playing with the tool. So I managed to get Google Wave invites for the other 2 members of our LMS Administration team.

Works like a charm. - As with any new tool, having a project in mind helps a lot. Our initial project - developing a draft outline for an Introduction to SkillPort class. (Oh The functions of an LMS (cataloging, course enrollment, learning plans, assessments, competency management) should be accessible by learners as services through the tools that they use every day. Sound advice from the nice folks at Funny Eye for the Corporate Guy The picture has nothing to do with the thoughts below - but with the way my past few weeks have been going, it's a good reminder. --------------­--------------­--------------­ My current thoughts on Google Wave - A Wave needs to be focused focused focused.

Prototype - Record the level of effort At this stage - I was still looking for one tool to rule them all. A solution with my existing tools that wouldn't require fancy middleware. Miller is an all-around computer guru who has worked in the eLearning industry (WHERE he worked escapes me right now). Miller: So what are you trying to do? Me: I'm trying to pull information out of Banner (Sungard product with an Oracle back end) and SkillPort to create reports You all are awesome! I am still taking advice.

An LMS is a big, expensive tool that takes quite a bit of work and is generally harder than you think it's going to be when you start out. SkillPort scores very high as well on satisfaction. LMSs (Saba, SumTotal, SkillPort, etc.) The VLE (Moodle, Blackboard, WebCT), on the other hand, is a tool for colleges, training providers and others who want to deliver (or at least support the delivery) of learning interventions online. Moodle (and I believe Blackboard in its latest release), even includes blogging and wiki tools. Yesterday eLearning Guild announced their Member's Choice Awards for Learning Management Systems (LMS). Now I don't normally get very excited about LMSs but these awards attracted my attention, because in amongst the Sabas and the SumTotals
The first request was to find some vendors to talk to. The leader of the Firewall Group (hereafter referred to as Leader) is more than willing to allow us to leverage the project to provide more tools for development in other topics, not just hers. And she wants to be flexible to work within the strengths of whatever solution we come up with. So in an attempt to narrow down the vendors, I came up with an initial list of requirements. • Stand-alone interactivity tool must be available for future development in-house. Especially as we move to SkillPort and start converting ILTs to eLearning. (Grrr...computer Found a cultural change - because realizing don't have to go it alone and tools exist.
