Animation and Media: Storyline is great for timed animation, special effects, and controlling exactly what each slide will look like. For example, I did a project last year that ended up with over 70 slides. You can download it or use the browser-based version. It’s also much easier to do audio in Storyline.

One advantage of reusing choices is that it reduces the overall size of the scenario; this gave me fewer slides to build in Storyline later. This is the map of the entire scenario. I might also use templates if multiple people are working on the same project and you need some consistent layouts or slides between them. mmhmm : Overlay a talking head on slides so the presenter and background or demo are both visible easily, with more customization than is possible in Zoom or other meeting tools on their own. Check out tools like Mural integrated with Zoom for an improved collaborative whiteboard or Mentimeter for better polls.

A scenario that was originally 52 passages in Twine ended up as 75 slides in Storyline–significantly more changes than we had hoped. In spite of setting the expectations, I didn’t get much feedback on the Twine version. Almost all of the feedback happened after I’d build the content in Storyline. Planning for revision.

If the first decision point has three choices, and those three each have three choices, and then those three have three choices, suddenly you have 40 slides after only three decisions for the learner. While they can be a valuable experience for learners, building branching scenarios can be time-consuming and challenging.

I ended up putting all the “chunks” of content into boxes on a PowerPoint slide and dragging and dropping until I was happy with it. Bring up a PowerPoint slide in your web conferencing software and drag and drop live while you’re on the phone. I was struggling a bit to figure out how to organize the pieces.

Most slides have a clickable area within the LMS interface. Each slide also has a hint button to give learners some extra tips. I also noticed that a few of my slides were working just fine without any change to those settings. The difference on the slides that were working was the order in the timeline.

It’s much easier to manage, and the number of slides and links doesn’t get out of control so fast. Even if you reuse options, let people correct mistakes , or use other techniques to manage the complexity , 4 choices at each decision point quickly become unwieldy. 2 options works sometimes.

However, if I don’t have visible page numbers (either directly on the slide or in a table of contents), I remove the formula and ask reviewers to type the page title or description. My spreadsheet includes a formula to automatically add the page title once reviewers enter the module and page number. That makes it easier for reviewers.

Number of slides for 45 minutes of branching: 150-300+. For the number of slides, let’s start with an assumption of one minute per slide–quick narration with lots of decisions. That’s 45 slides for the ideal path, but the actual number is at least 3 times that (135 slides).
