Jesse saw a post where I pointed to slides from a recent presentation and he commented: A PPT slide deck is a horrible way to convey anything significant. How about a link to audio, or better yet something like an Articulate Presenter or Breeze presentation that combines the audio and the slide deck? Why am I willing to do that?

As a moderator I always have speakers prepare a few context setting slides and have them prepared for the topics we'll be covering. So, from a more prepared context setting (often with PowerPoint slides to support) you go into a back-and-forth as discussed in the above pieces.

The home run is easy to describe: You put up a slide. I'm not sure I'm 100% on-board with only having emotional content on the slide and promising a leave-behind but not giving it out so people feel confident that they will have the details they want. It triggers an emotional reaction in the audience.

So, he made me go back and change my slide to say Life is MOSTLY an Open Book Test. You couldn't count on having the Boy Scout Manual with you during a survival situation so I had the students memorize what plants were edible, different ways to purify water, and first aid techniques.

One caveat that I mentioned above, I'm not a big fan of people who come in to grab a copy of the slides and then go to a different session, especially when there aren't enough copies for people who come and stay. A better practice is to come up and hand me a business card with your email and ask me to mail you a copy of the slides.

Captivate Captivate 4 introduced a TTS feature for adding slide narration and had NeoSpeech’s Paul and Kate voices built-in. Adding voice content Captivate lets you enter narration text for TTS voices through its slide notes pane. Example The screen shot below shows a Captivate slide with three lines of note text.

Interestingly, Stephen Downes' new presentation - e-Learning 2.0 - Why the New Tools includes a slide that quotes my blog post: I'm becoming convinced that folks in the informal learning realm are quite willing to live with "free range" learning. It's way too touchy-feely and abstract for me.

I don't have a particularly great voice for adding to the slide so that's a factor. of every other slide, recorded days or weeks or months earlier is invaluable. Bryan says that while it takes 34 hours of work to create one hour of instructor-led training, it takes an additional 33 hours simply to convert the PowerPoint slides from this same training into e-learning. Bryan Chapman’s research, which is quoted in many of these articles, yours included, points this out.
