Who are Instructional Designers? The existential dilemma.

Probably yes; Instructional Designs are sets of theories that are applied to create sound learning experiences. Be willing to learn and change and own up to mistakes--this requires no qualifier. Should IDs be called by some other name? The role is essentially an amalgamation of BA, and L&D, and Human Capital Management functions.

Quality or Quantity: What matters in the learning business.

It takes years to develop design sense; years to understand why a certain sentence just sounds more right than another; years to design a learning experience as opposed to slides full of chunks of text. Fast is measurable; so is cheap. Quality, in spite of all the parameters, remains largely unmeasurable.

At the moment, what I have written may sound really idealistic and far from reality, but my bet is workplace learning will change. A course can act as a trigger for discussions amongst participants for whom that course is essential learning and a thriving forum usually draws more participation.
