Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards. I’ve been reflecting on the benefits that standards have provided. What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission. What worked for email was standardization on the SMTP protocol.

Help with breaking up

We don’t have external standards. A term which made sense is ‘ curriculum mapping ‘ Which works for K12, but the advice I found wasn’t helpful in this instance. It seemed to be about iterating, which is good, but I was looking for some research-based principles.

Talking ‘transfer’

In talking learning science, I’ve seen and said that the two gold standards are retention over time until needed, and transfer to all appropriate (and no inappropriate) situations. Will describes transfer as moving learning from the instructional environment to the workplace. No argument this is important!

Competencies for L&D Processes?

That is, should your survey validation process, or your design process, also meet some minimum standards? So does it make sense to have processes meet minimum standards? Would anyone care that you meet a quality standard? All I know is that we have standards about a lot of things. How about design thinking ? Seriously.

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia.

Skills, competencies, and moving forward

Now, the reason I joined with IBSTPI (the International Board for Standards in Training, Performance, and Instruction) was to learn more about competencies. And I admit I had to look up the difference first! But then I could see where the emphasis should be on skills, competencies, and moving forward.
