On both occasions, the idea that most got me thinking was that 'synchronous is sovereign'. Having said that, I'm not convinced that synchronous events are all that exciting when the experience is no different from a recording. So, don't push the slider from all synchronous to all asynchronous - find the right balance.

You could then be supported in meeting those goals through YouTube-style video channels, communities of practice, shared content, webinars run using Saba Meetings, and so on. It is also possible to establish mentoring relationships and set up activities to support these. There's also a facility to track down an expert.

Why we need both live and self-paced communication

What caught my attention was how this 25-30% was made up, with about 2/3 asynchronous (self-paced) and 1/3 synchronous (live/real-time), although the majority of the non-e-learning elements are synchronous as well, using the traditional classroom. Synchronous communication is speedy and responsive; it gets things done right away.
