WiZiQ meets Moodle, no money changes hands

Clive on Learning

WiZiQ have just launched their Live Class module for Moodle. This integrates their free web conferencing solution directly into Moodle, so Live Class sessions can be implemented as Moodle activities and students can have seamless access to synchronous events, within the context of a blended Moodle course. The WiZiQ virtual classroom tool runs in Flash and contains many (although clearly not all) of the features associated with expensive commercial systems. Providing bandwidth for 1000s of virtual classroom sessions sounds expensive.

What Makes an LMS Easy to Use?

They are doing a combination of virtual classroom training (via WebEx) and self-paced eLearning. They currently use Moodle as an LMS with some customizations. And the person who asked the question tells me: My managers have asked me to find alternatives to Moodle that are more user friendly and that are easier to update and manage. I’ve discussed many times about dissatisfaction with LMS: LMS Satisfaction Features and Barriers LMS Dissatisfaction on the Rise and even a bit about the disconnect between an LMS and what things most users want / need: Do You WANT an LMS?

One Week to Select an LMS – No Way

Tony Karrer

This post was based on an inquiry that I received from someone who manages their current LMS implementation that is based on Moodle with some customization. They are doing a combination of virtual classroom training (via WebEx) and self-paced eLearning. And the person who asked the question tells me: My managers have asked me to find alternatives to Moodle that are more user friendly and that are easier to update and manage. There has been fantastic comments around Learning Management System Easy of Use. Now, I hate to say that this is all too common a situation.

E-learning on a shoestring

Clive on Learning

Use Moodle as a delivery platform, typically externally hosted, perhaps with some customisation. Smaller companies don't need full LMS functionality, so Moodle (perhaps with some extra goodies) will do this job adequately. Training providers will have no trouble using Moodle to provide course web sites to support traditional, e or blended solutions. Train up as many of the training team as possible in content design and development, setting up courses in Moodle and facilitating in a virtual classroom. Smaller organisations were essentially priced out.

Where are open source learning applications?

Tony Karrer

In it he points to the learning space and says that the current status of open-source learning applications is: Innovators - Elgg Learning Landscape and several others Early Adopters - Moodle and a few others Early Majority - nobody Late Majority - forget about it I would tend to agree with him that there are relatively few open-source learning applications, but would add a few thoughts. Good post by Harold Jarche - Where are open source learning applications? So, we should naturally expect to see open source solutions emerge where we see relatively stable feature sets.

Moving from One to Many - LMS Products are Two Generations Behind

Tony Karrer

Collaborative learning environments and strategies such as virtual classrooms, discussion forums, mentoring and coaching need to be enabled and mandated as part of the learning experience. The stuff being discussed in LAMS and Drupal/Moodle make me wonder what the landscape will look like in five years. We need to build the collaborative aspect of learning back into these experiences if we're going to achieve the collective outcomes we want. But I found myself disagreeing with where he took the conversation.
