A blog, profile, wiki won’t do it. – You better have on/off synch, native apps for iOS, Android and a bonus for Kindle (but it won’t hurt you if you do not) multiple mobile apps , one that covers only social, another for courses/content, etc. Mobile responsive? Vendors embraced “Facebook” like, and blogs and wikis – to reinforce social. Been around since the early 90’s and isn’t really social as much, unless you think chatting in the lunchroom at your workplace is a form of social learning. Yet, social as I often note, still is stagnant.

If you doubt this, look at how many vendors are now offering social learning – which they see as chat rooms, discussion boards, wikis, RSS feeds and a blog. . The problem thus lies in being behind the curve. Great, if it was 2008 or in the case of discussion boards and chat rooms, perfect for 1996.

Some vendors feel a blog and wiki is more than enough. Vendors who believe social media is nothing more than a blog or wiki are living in fantasy land. The issue that arises in social learning is how much to incorporate into a system. Others offer it as an add-on module and even then it has limited features.

The standard features are a blog and wiki. Social Learning. If your goal is to incorporate and offer social learning as part of your LMS, then this is one system I would not recommend. You can purchase an add on module which tosses in things like a RSS feed and some other features, but again, they are limited and so waaay in the past.

Unless vendors make monumental changes to social – as in coming up with something besides the FB like experience, wikis, blogs, discussion boards and other 2010 like experiences, you might as well – hit the turn off button. Let’s just stay with wikis – they are safer and boring. How dominant?
