The big elephant in the room that we hear so many times and vendors love to pitch (to get you to their system), but rarely the vendors themselves will admit to – many have only themselves to blame. Sometimes, it is the client’s fault and sometimes it is the vendor’s fault. I know, I know it is never your fault (client) – its those nasty LMS vendors, but as with the failure to recognize, often more than not it is duality, at least at some level.

In the early 2000’s right up to about 2012, trials were common in the learning system market. Especially in the 2008-12 time frame, when the economy on a global scale was in tatters. Not every vendor offered them, but more than enough did and consumers liked that. In the good ol’ days vendors listed trials on their web sites OR if you liked what you saw in the demo, you asked them via the phone or e-mail for a trial.

Who really wins?

I mention this, because in the e-learning world, there are winners and losers, albeit we do not call the vendors who lose out to a deal with a customer or an opportunity, losers. But make no mistake, one vendor is going to win and one or many will not. Despite the size of the industry, word does get around – with many vendors, not all mind you, but many. If you are seeking a system, high maintenance usually scares vendors off. Vendor is in the house.
