#HRTECH Learning Vendors Preview – Who to see and who to avoid

eLearning 24-7

Well, not yet, but it is coming up and with that are all those wonderful vendors and that magical expo. But one of the biggest problems I see at such shows are the number of vendors who in hindsight I wished I avoided. I recall at ATD this past year, a vendor who was trying to sell people ahead of time their LMS. And, because many of the other vendors who are here at HR Tech, really are just average to poor (but not everyone). Welcome, welcome all!

LMS Setup Fees: For some vendors it’s a cash cow

eLearning 24-7

Just as a seriously doubt many of the LMS vendors who feel it is their duty to charge one time setup fees that break your budget bank. The late 90′s through 2002 were the heyday of the dot.com era (actually I would say the late 90s to late 2000, were truly the high point before the wheels started to come off). There are plenty of vendors who do not charge any type of setup fee. Equally there are vendors who charge a setup fee for items that you need to make it go.

SCORM: What you should be asking your LMS Vendor to be

eLearning 24-7

Better yet, what does it mean to YOU when trying to find that LMS or LCMS vendor? Rather, I will focus on some questions you should ask or be asking your soon to be LMS/LCMS vendor. If you go back to 2000 or so, there was IEEE (not to be confused with firewire). AICC was the only standard that offered a certification process for vendors and it was based on tasks/components testing. Yet, many vendors often said they were certified, when in fact they weren’t.

When your LMS BFF is no longer

eLearning 24-7

The big elephant in the room that we hear so many times and vendors love to pitch (to get you to their system), but rarely the vendors themselves will admit to – many have only themselves to blame. Sometimes, it is the client’s fault and sometimes it is the vendor’s fault. I know, I know it is never your fault (client) – its those nasty LMS vendors, but as with the failure to recognize, often more than not it is duality, at least at some level.

Presidential Politics, LMSs – The Cycle

eLearning 24-7

What you get is only what the vendor tells you. Considering that the number of vendors who are public are minimal, the transparency flag isn’t flying high here. How many times have you heard this from vendors. ” So for those vendors or soothsayers that spew “Everyone hates their LMS.” I can guess, and often see that it is the case, that when a vendor says this or a consumer does they are looking at the Cornerstone or SumTotal or similar. .

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow. Because other vendors are getting into the act as well. There are more vendors in the LMS space under 10K then in the past – thus meeting the markets’ needs yet the authoring tool space is seeing a spike in prices. What is an equal frightening event is when authoring tool vendors do not even list their pricing on their page.

LMS Potluck

eLearning 24-7

As micro-learning gains more attention and more people are starting to utilize the methods in creating such courses, vendors who are aware of this new opportunity are making sure that people know that their system supports micro-learning. What makes this type of course design unique isn’t that it has been around for more than dozen of years, but that there are vendors who portray themselves whether intentionally or not, as “THE” micro-learning platform.

The 5 most common LMS complaints from end users

eLearning 24-7

I remember seeing some pricing online by a LMS vendor and then when I got the contract it had different pricing on it. See the price doesn’t mention that it costs extra to pull their name – so when you ask for it (and you should always find out) they will pull a rabbit out of their LMS hat and tell you it costs ABC (please realize that for the majority of vendors they remove their name at no cost). #2 Or there are vendors who only work in certain industries/verticals.

State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. Back in the early 2000′s, LMSs often had content mgt features built within their system, but called themselves learning management systems. rather then going through the LMS vendor. I have found I can land a better price then using the quick way via the LMS vendor.

Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

eLearning 24-7

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. Anyway, I expect this number i.e. number of vendors to offer more than 10 interactive templates to rise. Nowadays I am seeing vendors offer 15, 17, 25 and even 30 templates.

On Fire in 2013 – What’s going to be hot in e-learning

eLearning 24-7

One vendor already offers it in 2012, and knowing this industry – if something takes off and works, others will follow. Right now, you have to upload the course as you would with your SCORM wrapper, where you self-upload or use the course within an online mobile platform from your authoring tool vendor. One vendor told me they will incorporate it when it becomes certified – uh systems and authoring tools can be certified not a standard.

Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

eLearning 24-7

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

Dispelling the LMS Myth

Web conferencing or chat rooms – I know it might come as a shock but WebEx was alive and in full mode in 2000 and so was Centra – remember them? Customized skinning – albeit in today’s market there are some vendors who charge for skins – disgusting! Excluding the above, there are vendors out there who charge extra for. When a vendor offers the ability to add APIs, offer personalization, increases multilingual capabilities and provides.

The term was coined by a well-known individual, many moon ago, but how vendors are starting to use it today, is not the angle it was seen back then. I could easily see vendors leveraging a PXP, as part of a suite if you will. The vendor, after you buy say Advanced Metrics, turns it on.

It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. If you choose not to use the WebEx solution, you can use another via an API or another vendor, but for the latter it is a link to the web conferencing solution (common practice in the industry, if you do not use their preferred conferencing solution). Why vendors still think this is not needed or used, makes no sense.

Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. Back in 2000, the knock on rapid content authoring tools were they “pre-template” driven solutions. More vendors.

eLearning 24-7

SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. For a vendor who has been around for more than 14 years you would think they finally get the whole value of asynchronous based learning. Yeah it supports mobile and yeah it includes a nice feature set, and yeah its UI is strong, but while they were cool in the late 90′s and early 2000′s they seem to have lost their way.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. Some vendors who have failed to deliver, in my opinion, a user friendly system, due to front end or back end (admin side), or sometimes both. A few vendors (and not just on the above list), customize so much, that you really have no idea on what the system originally looked like. If I am vendor, whose product is paid (i.e.

The bandwagon rage are LMS vendors stating that their product/solution is optimized for tablets, specifically mentioning the iPad. LMS/LCMS/CMS Vendors.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Sure there are over 100 vendors in this industry and probably 95% you have never heard of and whom have great products that can meet or beat the big players.

LMS or LXP – Confused?

eLearning 24-7

Sure a vendor can say we are an LXP, but a LMS too or vice versa. LMS vendors on the other hand are adding LXP features, to counter, and in some marketing may note, learning experience blah blah. . One vendor Linkedin Learning bases it on everyone in the system, regardless if they work at your place or not. And to be fair, a chunk of LMS vendors aren’t either. LXP – The Answers you seek

eLearning 24-7

The way a 3rd party content provider works with an LXP (or any learning system that offers a marketplace) is that they have a partnership agreement – allowing the vendor to have them in their marketplace. You could purchase 3rd party content as early as 2000.

Trials – Learning Systems

eLearning 24-7

In the early 2000’s right up to about 2012, trials were common in the learning system market. Not every vendor offered them, but more than enough did and consumers liked that. In the good ol’ days vendors listed trials on their web sites OR if you liked what you saw in the demo, you asked them via the phone or e-mail for a trial. For the vendor, it was a potential win, way better than no one reaching out to them at all.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

After initial efforts in 1993, and bursts of energy circa 2000 and again in 2004, we’re seeing a new resurgence of activity and interest. The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism. At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax.
