Lots happening this week. Ran a Moodle training session for staff on thursday morning, seven made it and it really went down well. My plans to hold a Moodle conference at the end of term seem to be taking shape with the 19th December looking promising; you can expect some photos and pod cast from that, maybe even video.

A map is part of any simworld, that influences the visual experience of the player, level design, type of knowledge captured, and also the play/know/do. Wow, consolidation is running rampart in the eLearning space as everyone continues to merge or acquire. In my own experience I have found that to teach about collaboration and collaboration technologies, talking about it (lecture) was not adequate, and that I had to create the BTG (business transformation game), which was a hands-on, scenario-based, role-playing game that helped people learn about collaboration technologies as well as their behavioral interactions by actually using a variety of technologies in a scenario we created. Fist, I want to reveal my bias in this area.

Ironically, there will be a race, between using simulation techniques to actually better preserve local ways of doing business, and the the propagation of single ways (much, much better skills than are possible today) that will threaten to erase diversity of knowledge. I said back in a speech in 1999 that e-learning was over-rated in the short term and under-rated in the long term. I believe that statement is probably more true today, at least for the formal learning area.

There is the old cliche that train companies should have realized they were in the transportation business and invented and embraced airplanes. I bring this up because I think a lot about the training business. This always seemed a bit dim to me. There was just not that much value-add they could have, well, added. I don't mean the vendors, but the internal training group. What is the best model for them? For any group, what is their "brand," and what is their core competency?
