Aha Moments in 2007

Tony Karrer

I wanted to go back and figure out what things really struck me during 2007. Adoption is going to be personal/consumer first - organizational adoption is going to lag: Web 2.0 - Consumer vs. Enterprise Use. The Big Question is back.

Leading In a Technological Disruptive Market

Your Training Edge

While we all are appreciating and embracing disruptive technologies and innovations, it is still unclear whether we are able to convert our mindset into this repeatable process. Technological Disruptive Market Demands Disruptive Leadership. 6] Hamel, Gary & Breen, Bill (2007).

Interestingly, BJ Fogg (the professor) came onto my radar a few years ago because he was writing about persuasive technology - i.e., how do you persuade humans to behave a certain way with technology - a key component of human performance improvement through technology.

The Role of Technology in Digital Publishing

Kitaboo

From rocket eBook reader in 1998 to the ever popular Amazon Kindle readers first launched in 2007, the dedicated reading devices have evolved tremendously. Many just wait for the technology to mature before investing, others remain confused about how they can take advantage of the rich opportunities that are available in digital publishing. To simplify, technology in an eBook or digital publishing business can be broken down into three components – content, devices and platforms.

I think Tony's conclusion to the article may have been the most telling: Unless your organization is a true early adopter, it is premature to invest a ton of resources in VWs.

Horizontal Learning

Tony Karrer

Horizontal technologies for learning. These technologies are supposedly designed for learning but that is not true. These technologies are institution-centric and vertical by nature. In 2006 I was at EC-TEL where Scott Wilson asked the audience full of educational technology specialists, "how many of you use a LMS for your personal learning?”. Social technologies are different. Interesting post.

37% Adults Use Social Networking - Adoption to e-Learning

Vignettes Learning

When technology helps us to do things faster and better,we adapt. Social networking is perceived by many adults as waste of time. This is perhaps changing. Financial Post reported that 37% of adults visit social networking sites, 27% who visit FaceBook create a profile. I remember the time when corporate managers where suspicious of instant messaging. Today, it's part of our workplace tools.

Digital native or digital immigrant?

From the Coleface

Prensky’s metaphor of people being digital natives (intuitively understanding how recent technology works) or digital immigrants (needing support/ training in order to grasp new technology) seems wonderfully rich to me. As the people providing them with learning, we need to challenge our assumptions about how learners use technology – which methods need updating and which are constantly effective.

eLearning Defined

Tony Karrer

eLearning / E-Learning - Broad definition of the field of using technology to deliver learning and training programs. Took awhile for the right term to come about, circa 1995 it was all called "Internet based Training", then "Web-based Training" (to clarify that delivery could be on the Inter- or Intra-net), then "Online Learning" and finally e-learning, adopting the in vogue use of "e-" during the dot com boom.

Consider Generational Learning Styles and Tools

Kapp Notes

For the Greatest Generation, the Boomer generation and much of Generation X, this included a linear step-by-step approach with little technology in the classroom or room for discussion. In terms of technology, computers and even calculators were not available for much of the educational life of the boomers and only in middle or high school for much of Generation X. Teachers, trainers and other educators tend to teach in the same style and format in which they have been taught.

Brandon Hall Network - Back from the Dead?

Tony Karrer

I would actually like to believe that the community of people interested in the use of technology for learning and performance support would form a vibrant online community, exchanging ideas, making connections, etc. And, it's worse when you are targeting a particular community that doesn't have a great adoption rate. It takes a lot to get from putting up the network software to getting widespread adoption. Or maybe someone like ASTD will adopt Ning and give it a huge push.

But an encyclopedia is only one of the things you can build with wiki technology. Both are uses in smaller workgroups which is probably an early place to look for adoption. Great article - How Wikipedia Works (or Doesn't) that looks at Andrew McAfee's experiences around the " Enterprise 2.0 " article and Wikipedia 's Articles for Deletion process. It's an interesting discussion of the net impact of Wikipedia's process - which can be frustrating, especially to casual users.

4 Reasons Companies Should Adopt Mobile Learning…Are You Missing the Boat?

SHIFT eLearning

With the amount of mobile devices exceeding 7 billion (the world’s current population), mobile technology has provided companies with the opportunity to reach employees in new and striking ways. However, mLearning goes beyond simply using technology to deliver content to mobile devices; it is about knowing how to successfully operate across new and ever changing contexts and learning spaces. There is no question about it: now is the time to embrace mobile learning.

It’s a matter of culture

The Learning Circuits

My small training/consulting company was asked to prepare the entire staff on two fronts: intercultural (dealing commercially with other countries, including speaking the same language) and adoption of PCs (the machine, the keyboard, DOS, spreadsheets, databases, word processing, etc.). They could have adopted an attitude of "visionary evolution” focused on the long term, taking into account human behavior; but of course the obsession with quarterly results still makes that difficult.

Getting trainers on board

Clive on Learning

At the conference I attended this week in Luxembourg, participants were split into groups to try and find ways in which resistance to learning technologies from fellow learning and development professionals could be overcome. I kept notes of some of the more interesting suggestions to share with you: Adopt a blended learning strategy : Well I know what they meant, but as far as I'm concerned keeping classroom trainers on board is not a reason for blended learning.
