Happy 2008

From the Coleface

Welcome to 2008. If you want to catch up for a cuppa, track me down at one of the stands or give me a call. I’ve had a fantastic start to the year, with the joys of becoming a father for the first time. Lilia is gorgeous, hard work at times and suddenly 9:30 pm has turned into an eminently sensible time to go to bed, rather than a time to move on to the second pub.

Question: Tracking CBTs

Experiencing eLearning

My experience has mostly been in higher ed, so I’ve always needed to do grading or more tracking than what this reader needs: I am the sole person involved with e-Learning in my branch, and I am mostly limited to using freeware. Â My client wants two things that I am stuck on: 1) good server software for posting CBTs and then having basic tracking of student usage. Â While this is better than nothing, it is a far cry from the “real&# tracking of CBT course players.

Traces of how ideas travel

I found it through tracking the referring URL to my weblog. In the offline world, there is no way of tracking who is using your words, ideas, or who is talking about you. But online, it is much easier to track down what kind of ideas or blogposts get referred to.

Tracking Instructor-Led Classes in an LMS

eLearning Weekly

This week’s post starts with a simple question: At your organization, when you hold an instructor-led class, how do you give learners credit for attending the class in your LMS? I’ve seen organizations do this several ways, but I’ve never been a huge fan of how it gets done; it has always seemed like a workaround more than anything else. I’m going to list out a few of the ways I’ve seen. Please chime in if you know of other ways… Use a sign-in sheet.

Sorry - no time to track these down and link them right now. (Whew - longest title ever. From here on, I’ll refer to the conference as AG08.). We’re off to a great start! About 15 people attended and we had several great thoughts flying through the room for about an hour.

Using SharePoint

Tony Karrer

Some used it to track bugs. I've been having fabulous conversations about using SharePoint. SharePoint is so flexible and the documentation for it is so big and diverse, that a big part of my goals have been to understand the different ways that training organizations are using SharePoint. In my post SharePoint Examples there are some great examples in the comments. I've had conversations with several of these folks in more detail and with a few others.

CoComment Co.mments Switch

After struggling for a while with tracking my conversations via CoComment, I've recently decided to switch over to Co.mments. I discussed the specifics of Blogs, Community and Discussion Tracking - What's Really Needed a long time ago. It's still very messy to try to track all your activity across the network. It seems to be working pretty well. I considered a few of the other services as well, but it seemed like they were the best choice.

Metrics we actually track that are meaningful and useful that may be applicable to other learning professionals. Today, I saw a post by someone suggesting ways to come up with ideas for blog post topics and they gave some examples. The examples were not all that relevant to most of the readers of this blog, but it definitely sparked a thought for me. Almost every time I have a conversation, I learn something new. Most of the time I learn something, I write a blog post.
