This is an event where students of instructional technology have a conference with professionals in the field where they can learn, exchange ideas and select students for jobs and internships. It is a great win-win event.

Did most (or all) ID degree programs teach accessibility? Can anybody help this reader out with info about accessibility in a formal ID degree program? I received a question today that I can’t really answer, so I’m hoping that some of you out there who have actual degrees in instructional design can help me out. When I polled people on how you learn about accessibility earlier this year, only 1 person indicated they learned about accessibility from a formal course.

My organization has induction programs for new joiners who have no prior ID experience. This program introduces them to the basics of ID— theories, the processes that we follow, basically all the “how tos” about the stuff that we do. At the base would be a traditional learning program.

Whether in a classroom setting, via an online course or otherwise, the resident subject matter expert (SME) within the organisation typically provides the learner with a programmed sequence of knowledge, carefully scaffolding their learning and – to adopt a cognitivist view – construct a basic framework of knowledge in the learner’s mind. Instructivism is dead. Gone are the days of an authoritarian teacher transmitting pre-defined information to passive students.
