What Businesses Can Learn From Nonprofits

The Peformance Improvement

“If only not-for-profit organizations were run like for-profit companies …”, so goes the common refrain. For-profit companies have much to learn from the nonprofit sector. All are companies that could have benefited from following the practices of well-run nonprofits.

Where Social Learning Thrives

Jay Cross's Informal Learning

Read this inspiring Fast Company blog post by Marcia Conner. She nails what I have been calling learnscaping. Growing a culture of service is more like planting a garden than building a shed. A garden requires tending, whereas a shed is built once. A social learning culture requires design, training, guidance, leadership, monitoring and celebrating successes, large and small. People need to know where the organization is headed and why it matters.

Analysts and Blogging

Janet Clarey

I write an analyst blog and contribute to a group blog for my employer, Brandon Hall Research. The blogs are on the company’s URL. I also have this blog on my own URL here. So it was interesting to read of Forrester Research’s directive to analysts using their own personally branded research blogs: take them down or re-direct them to the Forrester site. Read my analyst blog and you’ll know I am curious, innovative, and ambitious.

What did 100 blog posts bring me?

Challenge to Learn

When I started my blog in December 2009 I was curious what it would be like to blog and I wanted to improve my English (I’m still working on that). My blog now has an average of almost a 100 views per day. That of course is nothing in the greater scheme of things, but it is much more than the average visits that I had in 2010 (7 views per day) and 2011 (37 views per day). I use my blog to try out ideas. I write posts too for easygenerators company blog.
