Why we need conferences

Clive on Learning

It's easy to think of conferences as rather old hat - top-down and push in an era that is increasingly bottom-up and pull; very un-green when we face huge environmental challenges; very extravagant when everyone but the Chinese is running out of money. But having spent some time now immersed in The Power of Pull by John Hagel III, John Seely Brown and Lang Davison (2010), I'm convinced that conferences will have an important role to play for years to come.

Moodle in 2010

Learning Visions

Join us at the Learning Solutions Conference & Expo 2010 in Orlando, March 24-26. Back in June, I asked if the corporate Moodle was at a tipping point ? People were on the fence. And then the eLearning Guild published their LMS report in the fall of 2009, with Moodle clearly gaining a foothold in the corporate market. Hear my October 2009 interview with Ellen Wagner , one of the report’s authors). So is Moodle still gaining traction in the corporate market? Surely seems to be.

The big question: predictions for 2010

Clive on Learning

The Big Question for January in the Learning Circuits Blog is, rather predictably, what are your predictions for 2010? In 2010, the pressure will reduce in many areas of the private sector, as the economy starts to recover and fear ceases to drive decision making.

Reflections on ISPI 2010

Clark Quinn

The ISPI organization gave each chapter a free registration to their international conference, which happens to be in San Francisco this year (just a Bart trip away), and I won! Now, it probably helps to explain that I’ve been eager to attend an ISPI conference for quite a while. I even considered submitting to the conference to get a chance to attend, but their submission processes seemed so onerous that I gave up.

19 Tips for Effective Online Conferences

Tony Karrer

I was recently asked me about my recommendations for conducting effective online conferences (virtual conference). They had attended the LearnTrends free online conference. This conference has been run for a few years now and is tentatively scheduled for November 15-17 this year. This is my attempt to collect some of what we’ve learned over the years doing those conferences.

Cows and Cakes at the IITT Training 2010 Conference

Rob Hubbard

I had the great pleasure of speaking at the IITT’s Training 2010 conference in the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square in London this week. He lamented the fact that elearning conferences were no longer as rock n’roll as they used to be (were they ever?) There should be healthy debate and conflicting views at a conference – that’s how we formulate and refine our own opinions.

I've just returned from the SITE 2010 Conference in San Diego. It reminded me that a colleague and I did a presentation that covered the issues of preparing to teach online and about the importance of School of Education faculty teaching online at a SITE conference at least 10 years ago. And also this year at SITE I was part of a pre-conference workshop raising the issue of Ed Schools now incorporating engineering education into their pre-service preparation of K-12 teachers.

Learning Solutions Conference: Experts of the Guild

Cross Conference Cogitations

Clark Quinn

In the course of the past month, I’ve attended (and spoken at) 4 conferences: DevLearn, WCET, VSS, and Online Educa. Each was from a different area: DevLearn is mostly corporate, WCET is largely higher ed, VSS is mostly K12, and Online Educa is more academic (and European). As a consequence, I’ve had a somewhat biased (mostly US) but reasonably broad exposure to the state of the industry. The news is mixed. There are some bright spots of innovation and excitement.
