There avatars wave good bye as the virtual world closes on March 9, 2010. Another consumer-based 3D virtual worlds is closing down in a few days. The well-known virtual world called There is closing on March 9, 2010. With virtual worlds, we can expand the use of storytelling. In a 3D virtual world, the learner is not just observing a story or scenario, the learner becomes a character within the story. To create an effective story within a virtual world, you need to create the following elements: Characters -This would include the learner or learners. Event By now you've probably already heard that the Microsoft Life Sciences Innovation Award 2010 has gone to a project that uses a 3-D virtual environment to hold a virtual scientific poster session. Results measured after the poster session demonstrated that the virtual environment was effective for scientific meetings and was well accepted by the current generation of scientists, suggesting that these environments can be used to deliver immediate value.

First, Metaplace announced it will be closing its virtual doors on January 1, 2010 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time. This was one of the alternatives I listed for something other than Second Life in my Alternatives to Second Life (continued, again) I described Metaplace as: Is a Flash-based virtual world platform that allows players to buy and sell items, own property and play online games. Now we are seeing it in the Virtual World space.

Creating the Right Environment for Your 3D Learning Experience

An important element in creating effective learning in a 3D virtual world is to create the right environment. Since virtual immersive environments are, by definition, immersive, the environment plays a critical role in the training process. A 3D world can be realistic like putting a person in a sales situation and asking them to perform or it can be more surreal like having a doctor walk through a giant heart to gain another perspective on human anatomy.

Yes, I know you can embed real interactivity into courseware via games, branched simulations, virtual worlds etc, but hardly anyone does that. The best of both worlds. If you are keen on creating interactive tutorials, games or virtual worlds, now you can go for it!

This was also the time when "virtual reality" was getting a lot of press. As the world moves and changes so should education. From time to time, I get questions from students who have an assignment to speak to someone in the field. I think those kinds of assignments are wonderful because they link pre-professionals and people learning about the field with people who have been in the field for a while.
